The Define portion of the ASCA National Model is a crucial component of success. It lays the foundation for what a school counseling program is and what school counselors are expected to do. Three parts make up the Define component. The first part is the ASCA Mindsets and Behaviors. This explains the attitudes, skills, and habits that students should develop. This section is organized into three main parts: academic development, career development, and social-emotional development. The second portion of the Define component is the ASCA Ethical Standards for school counselors. These standards detail how school counselors should behave to be their best. It gives guidance on several different areas. The final section of the Define component is professional standards and competencies. These standards define the attitudes, knowledge, and skills necessary for school counselors to create, implement, and assess a comprehensive school counseling program.
The Academic domain under the Define section of the ASCA National Model focuses on helping students be successful learners. School counselors can support students by helping them learn study skills, time management, and goal setting. School counselors can also help students make sure they have the right tools and support to perform well in school and stay on track to graduate on time.
The College and Career domain includes all the things a school counselor can do to help students after graduation. School counselors can help guide students in exploring different career options and understand what kind of education or training is required for the path they would like to go down. School counselors can also help with college applications and FAFSFA. School counselors can also help ensure students have the proper job-readiness skills. This area can help students make informed choices for their future.
The Social-Emotional domain under the ASCA National Model focuses on helping students build the personal and social skills they need for a healthy and successful future. School counselors can help students find ways to manage stress, cope with emotions, and handle conflicts. The overall goal of this domain is to help students feel safe and supported.
