A key part of the Assess component is the school counselor self-assessment, which is completed using the ASCA School Counselor Professional Standards and Competencies Assessment. Through this process, a school counselor can reflect on their own mindsets, behaviors, strengths, and areas for growth. This self-assessment can help a counselor guide their professional development and ensure their work aligns with the ASCA National Model.
The Ridgeview School Counseling Department uses the Assess component to develop meaningful program goals. At the beginning of the year, survey data is gathered from students, parents, and teachers to identify needs, concerns, and other areas that require additional support. The survey and student outcome data are reviewed to evaluate the effectiveness of school counseling services. Additional data that can be used include attendance trends, academic performance, behavioral referrals, and teacher feedback.
At Ridgeview High School, data is used to understand what our students need and how we can continue to improve the school counseling program. By examining attendance, behavior, and academic data, we can identify where support is needed. This also helps identify any gaps and work to close them. Data can also show us if the things we are doing, such as small groups and one-on-one counseling, are helping. It can help us guide our future programs and decisions. Reviewing our data helps ensure that every student has access to the support they deserve and that changes can be made when necessary.
