Athletic Training FAQ
What is an Athletic Trainer?
An Athletic Trainer (AT) is an Allied Healthcare professional who specializes in injury prevention, as well as the assessment, treatment and rehabilitation of athletic injuries.
How do I find the Athletic Trainer?
The AT can be found on campus daily! The Athletic Training Room is open starting at 12:00 by appointment and at 1:30 for drop-in visits, and the Athletic Trainer remains on campus until the end of sporting events.
What do I do if I get hurt?
If you are injured, regardless of how, please see the Athletic Trainer, Rachel Marino, in the Athletic Training Room. The AT will assess the injury and make the appropriate recommendations.
What about follow-up after my injury?
The outcome of your treatment will be improved if you follow up with the Athletic Trainer. Be sure to check in daily and complete all instructions you are given so that you can recover as quickly as possible. If you are not improving, please let the AT know. If you don't come see the AT, it may be assumed that you are doing fine. Any limitations in your workout, lifting and conditioning should be discussed with the Athletic Trainer, who can help communicate restrictions or modifications necessary to your coach(es).
When does my child need a doctor's note?
Any time your child goes to see a doctor for an injury or long term illness that affects their ability to participate in athletics, they will need a note to return. Our recommendation - when in doubt, get a note!!
What should I do if I suspect my student-athlete may have sustained a head injury?
If your student-athlete sustains a head injury and an Athletic Trainer is not present, for an emergency dial 9-1-1 or take them to their primary care physician or Emergency Room for evaluation. If an AT is on site, please have them consult the AT staff for evaluation and further recommendations. If a concussion is diagnosed by the physician, a graduated return to play protocol supervised by the AT staff is required before returning to full participation.
