Families apply to the program through the district’s magnet/choice lottery system each winter and spring. All registration information and materials are posted on the district’s Choice Program page.
All entering Kindergarteners are eligible to apply for this program without any type of assessment.
The overall goal of the Dual Language/Immersion program is to promote high academic achievement in literacy and proficiency in two languages while enhancing the level of cultural awareness among students. “Late Entry” means that a student is entering a specialized program at a grade other than the normal entry grade of kindergarten. This applies to students who will be entering 1st grade and higher. Our dual language/immersion programs are not designed for students who have not had exposure to the target language. Students in these programs should already be familiar with the language.
1st Grade applications may be submitted. However, 1st Grade space is limited on the number of vacancies and will be filled first by any students on the previous year’s Kinder Waitlist, generated from the last year’s lottery.
English Home Language students will only be placed in 1st grade up until the end of December. After this time, the students will not have the academic foundation in speaking, reading, and writing in Spanish needed to be successful in the program.
In grades 2+, applications from English Home Language students are no longer accepted into the program unless they have lived abroad in a Spanish speaking country, attended another Spanish immersion program or are able to demonstrate grade level academic proficiency in Spanish.
Spanish Home Language students may apply to the program at any grade level.
Commitment: Due to the highly structured plan of learning in two languages, we ask that parents commit to the program through at least 8th grade.
Students who exit our elementary immersion program at Polo Road Elementary are guaranteed placement in our program at E. L. Wright.
Students who are coming from a school with a Spanish immersion program, have attended school in a Spanish-speaking country, or are from a Spanish-speaking country are welcome to apply to the program at any grade level. Acceptance will be based on demonstrated grade level academic proficiency in Spanish.
Commitment: Due to the highly structured plan of learning in two languages, we ask that parents commit to the program through at least 8th grade.
