Dear Parent/Carer
A Level Results Day – THURSDAY 15th AUGUST 2024
Now that exam season is well underway, I am writing to you to outline the details for Results Day in August
and explain our arrangements for supporting any students who need advice on the day.
0800 Year 13 results will be available for collection from the Mezzanine (no earlier than 8.00am due to the embargo on results before that time). Members of staff will be on hand to give help and
advice to students who do not get the grades they need for either their Firm or Insurance choices. Students need to come to school with all the necessary contact information (see bullet points 1 and 2 below). They should bring their iPads with them, and a fully charged phone, in case they have not secured the grades required for their Firm or Insurance choices of university and need to do some research.
Please remember, results can only be handed to a representative of the student if prior written authorisation has been given by the student and submitted to Mr Reid, our Examinations Officer. Results cannot be given by telephone.
0800 Year 13 results will be available on Bromcom/MCAS. We would, however, encourage all students to come into school at 8.00am in order to collect results in person in case they need
support and advice.
0800 UCAS Track will be updated at about 8.00am and this will show your son/daughter the status of their university application. Students should make sure they have their login details to hand!
Post Examination Services
Mr Reid will be available on the day to offer guidance on any reviews of marking or access to scripts. A student consent form (available on the day) must be submitted with each post-exam service request.
Payment will be taken by card.
Service Cost
Script copy £5
Clerical re-check per component £10
Review of marking £50
Priority review of marking £60
The result of any review of marks is final: your son’s/daughter’s grade could go down. Only if his/her paper is 1 or 2 marks below the higher grade boundary, therefore, should a review be considered. Where a review results in a higher grade, you can request a refund from the school, which will not be charged by the exam board.
Student Preparation for Results Day for those with applications to university
Clearly, we hope that your son/ daughter secures the grades necessary to be accepted onto their chosen course. However, it is best to be prepared for any eventuality and so I would request that your son/daughter does the following at some point between now and Results Day.
• Look up the contact details of the Admissions Office and the Admissions Tutor for their Firm and Insurance choices. (Bring these details on Results Day.)
• If your son/ daughter is worried that they might not have achieved the grades required for either of their choices, then it is worth them spending time before Results Day researching courses they
might potentially be interested in applying for through Clearing. From 5th July, it will be possible to do a filtered search on the UCAS website for Clearing course vacancies
(https://digital.ucas.com/search). It is well worth investing the time before results day as some Clearing opportunities are only open for a brief period (and speed is of the essence in applying
through Clearing). It helps, therefore, if your son/daughter has already done the research and has the numbers ready to phone the appropriate Admissions Offices on the day.
• Follow the link to advice on the UCAS website about Clearing: https://www.ucas.com/undergraduate/clearing-and-results-day/what-clearing
Further information about Results Day is available here: https://www.ucas.com/undergraduate/clearing-and-results-day/about-results-day
In the meantime, please could you strongly encourage your son/daughter to regularly check (and action where needed) their emails in case of communication from the university of their choice. Students could also take the opportunity they have now to check their Firm/Insurance University websites to research what scholarships/ bursaries might be available, as well as investigate any Facebook/ social groups set up to put students in contact with others heading for the same courses/ accommodation. Many universities also offer ‘live-chat’ facilities in case students have any questions.

Opportunities for school leaver programmes, apprenticeships and posts for school leavers are still being posted on the Yr 13 Opportunities noticeboard, so please encourage your
son/ daughter to continue checking their emails! They should also keep an eye on the Vacancy Snapshot on the Amazing Apprenticeships website for upcoming vacancies, as well as
using the government website.

Please do remember too that Mrs Stansbridge, our Careers Lead, is available until the end of term should anyone wish to book an appointment for some additional advice.
On Results Day
We would advise all students to come into school for 8.00am – either as a good way of starting to celebrate their success, or to get advice from staff who will be on hand to help support
any students who might need help.
If your son/daughter is not certain before coming in whether they have had confirmation of a place from either their Firm or Insurance choice, they should ensure they bring with them their
UCAS user name and password, UCAS ID number, a printout of both firm and insurance offers and the names and phone numbers of both admissions tutors.
You might like to make a note of the UCAS Exam Results Helpline (open from 8am to 8pm Monday to Friday and 10am to 5pm on Saturdays from Thursday 15th August to Saturday 31st August)

Dear Parents
The end of year reports for Yr 12 students are now available to view on Bromcom.
In addition to an Attitude to Learning (AtL) report, the end-of-year exam results are reported, together with a projected grade.
The Projected Grade is the grade that – based on all available evidence – staff judge to be the likeliest outcome for their subject in August 2026. This might be, but will not necessarily be, the grade that is predicted for the student for the purposes of UCAS applications next term, as, by that stage, students will have produced more work which will also be taken into account, and which may allow for a higher grade to be predicted.
I would like to take this opportunity to congratulate our students on their diligence and commitment across the course of this year. Many of them have done extremely well in their recent exams and should be proud of what they have learnt this year.
For those students who have compulsory catch-up work to do over the Summer, a separate communication will be sent detailing this work for each individual.
I wish you a restful summer and look forward to welcoming our students back in September for their final year of schooling. Before the end of term, they will be sent an email with the time of their meeting with their mentor on Wednesday/Thursday, 3rd/4th September. Please could you ensure that they put a reminder for this in their calendar.
Could I also please take this opportunity to ask you to check that your son/ daughter has made a note of the deadline for uploading their much improved personal statement to Anyverse at the end of the Summer. (Please refer to my communication last week regarding this.)
With best wishes

Dear Parent/ Carer
I am sorry to have to let you know that Anyverse – who we were working with to provide subject specific feedback on students’ personal statements – is no longer operational.
However, the two founders of the organisation, who we have worked with for several years, and who have extensive experience of university admissions, have – extremely generously – offered – free of charge - to give each of our students one review of and feedback on their personal statement. (If you have, therefore, already paid the £20 for this service, your money will now be refunded.)
In order for students to get maximum benefit from their expertise, we have agreed that students can have the Summer holidays to respond to the feedback from their mentor - making sure, in particular, that they work hard to ensure that Sections 1 and 2 of their personal statements (focused on their super-curricular studies) are as detailed, specific and analytical as possible.
They will then have the following ‘windows’ within which to submit their personal statement for final feedback from the Anyverse founders:
Early applicants: 29th August-5th September (the closer to 29th August, the better)
All other applicants: 15th-26th September
This allows students to be given feedback for any final ‘tweaks’ by 12th September (early applicants) or 10th October (all other applicants) in order to facilitate students’ submission of their completed applications by Monday 22nd September (early applicants) or Monday 3rd November (all other applicants).
The school will then start the process of checking and sending off applications to UCAS.
It is extremely important that all deadlines are adhered to by students in order to ensure they can get the support we offer them and that the school can meet the deadlines set for us by UCAS. Please could you note the appropriate dates in your calendars in order to support your son/ daughter in doing this.
Should you have any questions regarding the UCAS process or personal statements, please do not hesitate to get in touch at any point before the end of term. Students should also feel free to ask either me or their mentor directly should they have any queries.
Best wishes

Dear Parents/Carers,
Just a reminder that students in Year 12 should be actively finding themselves a work placement for the week of Monday 7th-Friday 11th July. This is the last week of the school term and is compulsory for all year 12 students. Anyone who is on a school trip for that week has been identified and encouraged to do work experience at another convenient out of school time.
All information regarding work experience for parents is on the school careers webpages- www.richardchalloner.com/careers. Students have had since September to research and ask for help in how to find a placement. There have been a handful of placements that have been sourced by myself and opportunities communicated via the showbie group dedicated to work experience.
Once a placement has been sourced students send the google sheet to the employer direct and a medical form completed.
Work experience is such a great opportunity for students to explore their skills and future pathways before returning in year 13 and committing to their next steps.
All placement forms need to be with me by 31st May at the very latest. This is to allow time for the paperwork to be checked for all students. No students placement is confirmed until I have received and checked all the employer information.
Yours Sincerely
Mrs Stansbridge
Dear Parent/ Carer
Further to my communication in February regarding the UCAS Exhibition to be held at the Excel Centre, Royal Victoria Dock, 1 Western Gateway, London, E16 1XL, I write with a reminder of the details.
Students should all now have downloaded their ticket individually and should remember to bring this with them (printed or on a mobile device).
Details of the event and the exhibitors can be found here: Details of event and exhibitors . If they haven’t yet done so, they should plan out which exhibitors they wish to speak to and take with them a list of questions they would like to ask them.
Students will travel to and from the venue independently. On arrival, they must register with me between 9 and 9.15am, at the entrance to Hall N7 at the ExCel Centre. Failure to do so will be treated as truancy.
All students should plan out their route in advance and leave time for transport delays.
Our booked time slot is 9.30-11.30am. Afterwards, those students who have either Chemistry or PE lessons on a Tuesday afternoon at Richard Challoner must make their own way back to school to arrive in time for their lesson.
All other students may choose to stay in London in order, for example, to make use of their time to visit any of the number of museums there to enrich their super-curriculum.
With best wishes

Dear Parent/ Carer
I have just sent an email to all Yr 13 students, letting them know that Student Finance applications are now open. The deadline for these is 14 May 2025. Applying by this date will guarantee that any funding a student is eligible for is in place for the start of the new academic year in September 2025.
All full-time UK students wanting to apply for financial support for their studies should make an application through Student Finance England: Student Finance England
If your son/ daughter has applied for university this year - even if they don't know yet which will be their Firm and which their Insurance choice, they should still apply for Student Finance, just putting down the university they think will be their first choice (as this can be changed later).
Best wishes

11th February 2025: Future Pathways
Dear Parent/ Carer
Further to my communication in October regarding preparations for our students regarding their future pathways, I am writing regarding two further dates for your/ their calendars:
UCAS Exhibition Visit: Tuesday March 25th 2025
I am delighted to let you know that we have been able to secure free tickets to the UCAS Exhibition to be held at the Excel Centre, Royal Victoria Dock, 1 Western Gateway, London, E16 1XL.
Students have been sent an invitation to this via email and must respond to that email within the next two weeks in order to download their ticket individually ahead of the event.
This is a compulsory Careers event for all Yr 12 students.
Details of the event and the exhibitors can be found here: https://www.ucas.com/events/ucas-discovery-london-2025-455711 and I have also emailed all Yr 12s with further details, and with advice on preparing appropriately to get the most out of the Exhibition.
Students will travel to and from the venue independently. On the day, they must arrive to register with me between 9 and 9.15am, at the entrance to Hall N7 at the ExCel Centre. They must leave sufficient time for travel for this. (The travel time from school is approximately 90 minutes, but it may well be longer from home.)
Our booked time slot is 9.30-11.30am. Those students who have the following lessons on a Tuesday afternoon at Richard Challoner must make their own way back to school to arrive in time for their lesson:
• Chemistry
• English Language
• PE
All other students may choose to stay in London in order, for example, to make use of their time to visit any of the number of museums there to enrich their super-curriculum.
Future Pathways Parents’ Information Evening: Wednesday 30th April
Please do make a note in your calendars now that we will be holding an information evening about future pathways beyond Sixth Form (to include information about universities/ UCAS, student finance, and apprenticeships) on Wednesday 30th April, starting at 6pm.

It will now take place on Wednesday 7th May, starting at 6pm.

At the beginning of the academic year I contacted you outlining the work experience programme for year 12. As a reminder the week allocated by the school is the very last week of term- Monday 7TH July- Friday 11th July 2025.
Students have been given all the tools and timeline to follow and have joined a showbie group with the google sheets they need to complete. The two forms to be completed are:
-medical form with parental signature as students wont be on school site.
-placement confirmation form with insurance details (essential)
Students receive reminders in school on a regular basis but I wanted to make contact to home to reiterate that students need to be finding their own placements.
To allow time for placement information to be checked, the deadline for students sourcing their placements needs to be the end of May. Students have had since September to begin searching, sourcing and asking for hints and tips so plenty of opportunity to research.
The aim of the programme is to give students the opportunity to get out and try the careers they are thinking of before committing to degrees, apprenticeships or employment in these fields. It comes at a prime time in their 6th form lives and gives students a useful reflection to use on future applications.
Please do not hesitate to get in touch, if there are any questions,
Yours Sincerely

Dear Parent/ Carer
As we near the end of term, I just wanted to let you know that the AtL (Attitude to Learning) Reports for this term have now been published via Bromcom/MCAS.
For Yr 13s, this includes not just an indicator of your son’s/ daughter’s attitude to learning over the course of the last two half-terms, but also an indicator of their projected grade in comparison with their FFT Minimum Expected Grade and – more importantly for most students at this stage – their UCAS predicted grade. The ‘projected grade’ is the grade that – given all the evidence at this stage available to staff – is the one teachers would expect your son/ daughter to achieve in Summer 2025, assuming they continue working with their current approach. Please do take the opportunity during the coming few days to discuss this report with your son/ daughter.
I would like both to congratulate our students on rising well to the challenges of this very important term in their progress through the Sixth Form, and take this opportunity to thank you as parents for all your hard work in supporting your sons and daughters over the last term. We wish you all a restful and blessed Christmas.

Dear Parent/ Carer
As we near the end of term, I just wanted to let you know that the AtL (Attitude to Learning) Reports for this term have now been published via Bromcom/MCAS, alongside students’ Minimum Expected Grades and a recent ‘snapshot’ of their performance.
The Minimum Expected Grades are based on data generated by FFT (Fischer Family Trust) that gives us an indication of the grade that might be expected of a student with a similar profile to your son/daughter in terms of their GCSE results and chosen A level/ BTEC courses.
Also included is an indicator of their academic progress as outlined below.
• If ‘none’ is recorded under ‘academic concern’, then this means that the student is working at an academic level that is likely to lead to them achieving or exceeding their minimum expected grade.
• If ‘moderate’ is recorded under ‘academic concern’, then this means that the student is not working at an academic level that is likely to lead to them achieving their minimum expected grade.
• If ‘serious’ is recorded under ‘academic concern’, then this means that the student is producing work of a standard that would indicate a considerable gap between their minimum expected grade and the likely outcome at the end of A level and/ or is producing work that would suggest they are in danger of getting a U grade in the End of Year 12 exams and therefore of possibly not being able to continue the course into Yr 13.
Obviously, where there are concerns, these will be followed up by us in the new year. However, in the meantime, please do take the opportunity to discuss this report with your son/ daughter.
I would like both to congratulate our students on rising well to the challenges of this term, and take this opportunity to thank you as parents for all your hard work in supporting your sons and daughters. We wish you all a restful and blessed Christmas.
We look forward to meeting you in person at our Academic Review Evening on Thursday 23rd January. Further details regarding booking meeting times for this will follow in the new year.

Please note that your son’s/ daughter’s Attitude to Learning (AtL) report is now available to access via MCAS (under ‘Documents’). Please do look at this with them, and discuss what they think they might need to change in order to improve their AtL assessments further. (Obviously, if they have ‘Above & Beyond’ across all subjects, then they can simply be congratulated!)
Should you have any questions regarding this, please do not hesitate to contact Mr Araim, the Year Leader for Yr 12.

(Obviously, if they have ‘Above & Beyond’ across all subjects, then they can simply be congratulated!)
Also included on the report are your son’s/ daughter’s UCAS predicted grades which will obviously be helpful for them in finalising their university choices if they are applying to university. They should remember that UCAS predictions should not be taken as guaranteed future grades. These are the grades that, given the available evidence, teachers believe students could achieve.
As communicated last year, in making their 5 university choices, students should ensure they select courses with a range of entry requirements between what might be regarded as their ‘best case scenario’ in Summer 2025 and their ‘worst case scenario’. So, if they are predicted BBB, they might select three courses that usually require BBB (or one aspirational that usually requires ABB and two at BBB), one that requires BBC, and one that requires BCC/CCC.
Can I take this opportunity to remind you that all UCAS applications need to have been submitted by students by the end of the day on Monday 4th November. (Their application does not go to UCAS at this stage, but it allows us to do the necessary checking and processing before then sending it on.)
Should you have any questions regarding any of this, please do not hesitate to contact myself or Ms Wilkinson, the Year Leader for Yr 13.
Yours faithfully

Future Pathways: Thinking Ahead
Dear Parent/ Carer
Future Pathways – getting our students started:
As your son/ daughter might have mentioned, I have started sending out emails to them regarding a range of opportunities to get them started on thinking about their pathway beyond Summer 2026. I have also spoken to them this morning about building their super-curriculum, and they have resources to help them with this in Showbie. Although 2026 might seem a long way away, it is important they start to do some research and thinking now.
Careers Event: Friday 15th / Saturday 16th November:
There is a good starting point coming up in the ‘What Career Live’ event at Olympia on 15th and 16th November. I have shared the link with students for them to sign up. They can leave at lunchtime on Friday 15th in order to attend. Please see the website for more details:
What career live link
Taster Days and Open Days:
A range of subject taster days are held online and in-person. Please see this link for details: click here for taster days. A complete listing of open days can be found here:

Work Experience:
Our Careers Lead, Mrs Stansbridge, has also run a session for Yr 12 Students on Work Experience and CV writing. All the information they need has been shared with them via Showbie.
It is an expectation that all our Yr 12s arrange for themselves a week’s work experience from 7th to 11th July. Although it is often easiest to arrange work experience with local organisations with which you might already have a connection, you and your son/ daughter might also find the following website useful:
http://www.studentladder.co.uk/Work-Experience/work-experience.html. (If you go to the ‘School’ tab at the top, you can search for work experience for Yr 12s according to specific employment sectors.)
When organising Work Experience, please do check that the organisation has an ‘Employers’ Liability Insurance Policy’.

Dear Parents/Carers of Year 12/13,
Richard Challoner School is committed to ensuring students have the best resources available to plan ahead for their future and as part of that students are provided with impartial Careers Education, Information, Advice and Guidance. This can be in lessons, through school events, the careers library and also through the Careers Lead and CEIAG Advisor, Mrs Stansbridge.
Throughout the year Mrs Stansbridge will focus on seeing students either in small groups or individually beginning with students in year 11 to help them think about important choices for post 16 education. Students in years 7-13 will also be offered opportunities as the year progresses and at key points in their decision making.
For year 12/13-
• 1:1 Careers appointments will be available to those who require one. Students need to arrange this directly with the Careers Office and will be carried out on days from January through to the summer term.
• If, as a parent, you have questions or would like to speak to me please make contact through the email address below.
• Year 12 will partake in work experience during the last week of the summer term. This is confirmed at Monday 7th-Friday 11th July 2025. They will have an assembly on this and a showbie group with information available. All students are expected to take part and provide a summary of their experience.
• Year 12 and 13 will have assemblies from myself regarding different aspects of their learning.
• Alongside their PSE and mentoring students are able to access the Careers Office and Careers section in the main school library.
• Information regarding other routes post 18 available through Careers Office, Assemblies, Speakers and sessions. This is in coordination with the 6th form team.
• Careers cafes and careers events focusing on future pathways and spotlights on industries.
• National Apprenticeship Week in February and National Careers Week in March are celebrated in school with activities taking place during tutorial time and materials are placed on the website in advance.
Introducing the concept of careers and future planning at an early stage does allow students to explore their strengths and help to make informed choices. Each year group will also have time in their pastoral programme to explore these themes in more detail. Students are also welcome to drop into the careers office at any break or lunch time Monday- Thursday.
This year we are continuing to use our careers platform called Xello. More information is available on the careers pages linked above and we hope to roll out a parent side later in the academic year to allow you to see your sons progress and career ideas. Students have access to this platform via their ipads and can use independently and during guided time in careers units
There will also be support for school activities and arranging for professionals from varying careers backgrounds to come in and work with students to inspire and bring the working world further into education.
Please take this opportunity to talk at home about future plans and if you have any queries, questions or would like to support these activities in anyway please contact the school or email careersiag@challoner.kingston.sch.uk
If you are able to support in these activities through giving a talk, representing your company or industry or sharing stories with students please complete the following short google form- https://forms.gle/5NQCtPLRzyEhPUiu5
Please also visit the careers pages on the school website https://www.richardchalloner.com/careers where there will regularly be information regarding events or opportunities as well as some useful information for parents around career planning. I will write to you again with an update later in the academic year.
Yours sincerely

Dear Parents/ Carers
As you know, all Yr 12 students will by now have had feedback on the first draft of their personal statement from their mentor. Their job over the Summer is to respond in detail to this feedback, where necessary, doing some additional super-curriculum work (academic case-studies in their chosen subject of further study). The need for the personal statement to be specifically academic in nature cannot be over-stated.
Afinity upload deadline: Friday 6th September (Friday 30th August for all early applicants)
Please could you make a note in your calendars now of the deadline (above) for your son/ daughter to upload their – much improved – draft of their personal statement towards the end of the Summer holidays to Afinity for further, detailed, subject-specific feedback. The link for them to do this is in Showbie: 2024-25 Future Pathways. (They have been informed of this deadline, but I often find a ‘nudge’ from home is also needed!)
With very best wishes for the Summer

Dear Parent/Carer
As we near the end of term, I just wanted to let you know that the AtL (Attitude to Learning) Reports for this term have now been published via Bromcom/MCAS, alongside their Minimum Expected Grades and a recent ‘snapshot’ of their performance.
If ‘none’ is recorded under ‘academic concern’, then this means that the student is working at an academic level that is likely to lead to them achieving or exceeding their minimum expected grade.
If ‘moderate’ is recorded under ‘academic concern’, then this means that the student is not working at an academic level that is likely to lead to them achieving their minimum expected grade.
If ‘serious’ is recorded under ‘academic concern’, then this means that the student is producing work of a standard that would indicate a considerable gap between their minimum expected grade and the likely outcome at the end of A level and/ or is producing work that would suggest they are in danger of getting a U grade in the End of Year 12 exams and therefore of possibly not being able to continue the course into Yr 13.
With best wishes

Dear Parent/ Carer
Our Yr 12 students have a busy term ahead. Not only do they have end-of-year exams commencing 12th June – the results of which will contribute to their predicted grades - but they will also be stepping up a gear in terms of preparing for any applications they might be making to university courses, apprenticeships, school leaver programmes, or work.
Easter Holidays
In order to help students get ahead, I have set them some ‘homework’ on Bromcom, the resources for which are to be found in Showbie in the 2023-2025 Future Pathways class.
I have asked them to
1. Do some specific preparation for the UCAS Exhibition visit on Tuesday 16th April
2. Get started on researching their options using a work pack provided by UCAS
Wednesday afternoons next term: schedule for students
• 17th April: Investigating your options (including a talk from the Education and Development Trust about higher and degree apprenticeships)
• 24th April: How to write an excellent personal statement/ letter of application
• 1st May: Personal statement planning; drop-in Future Pathways/ UCAS ‘clinic’
• 8th May: Personal statement planning; drop-in Future Pathways/ UCAS ‘clinic’
• 15th May: Step-by-step writing of a personal statement
• Monday 20th May: DEADLINE for the submission of the completed first draft of personal statements to mentors
• 22nd May: Personal statement ‘detention’/ support session if necessary
There will then be a break to allow students to focus purely on revision for their exams.
• Monday 24th June: All Day Future Pathways/ UCAS/ Ambassadors’ event
Additional key dates
Tuesday 16th April: visit to the UCAS Exhibition in Farnborough
Please can you ensure that your son/ daughter arrives in school for 8am. Please also inform us about any medicines being carried, including asthma pumps, which must be checked in advance to ensure the pump will not run out during the trip, and that it is in date. Medicines must be clearly marked with the student’s name, be in their original containers, and include instructions for their use.
Wednesday 8th May: 6-8pm: Future Pathways Information Evening for Yr 12 parents
• Post-18 options
• Student finance
• Personal statements
Useful Resources
In the meantime, the UCAS website has a whole host of resources to support the investigation of possible future pathways. It is not just a portal used for university applications.
Do sign up for their parent newsletter: https://www.ucas.com/parents-signup
I very much look forward to seeing you for our Future Pathways Information Evening for Yr 12 Parents on Wednesday 8th May, and to working with you to support our students’ journey into their futures beyond school.

Dear Parent/Carer
I am writing to alert you to what seems like an increase in the use of ‘snus’ and/or nicotine pouches among our students.
Snus is a smokeless tobacco product, and is illegal to sell in the United Kingdom. Although tobacco-free snus, also known as nicotine pouches, can currently be legally sold to under-18s due to a legal loop-hole, these regulations are due to be tightened imminently.
Regardless of the various legalities in the purchase and consuming of these products, some of them contain as much nicotine as a cigarette and are therefore highly addictive. Their use has been linked to an increased risk of dental issues, oral cancer and pancreatic cancer, as well as other health risks.
Given that this seems to be a relatively new phenomenon, we thought it sensible to let you know so that you can be alert to any evidence of use of these products at home and are aware of the risks.
Because we take our duty of care seriously, if we have evidence from now on of any student bringing these products into school and/or using them in school, we will confiscate and dispose of them, sanction the student appropriately and, of course, contact home.
Yours faithfully
Catherine Verdin
Dear Parent/Carer
As we near the end of term, I just wanted to let you know that the AtL (Attitude to Learning) Reports for this term have now been published via Bromcom/MCAS.
For Yr 13s, this includes not just an indicator of your son’s/ daughter’s attitude to learning over the course of the last two half-terms, but also an indicator of their projected grade in comparison with their FFT Minimum Expected Grade and – more importantly for most students at this stage – their UCAS predicted grade. The ‘projected grade’ is the grade that – given all the evidence at this stage available to staff – is the one teachers would expect your son/ daughter to achieve in Summer 2024, assuming they continue working with their current approach.
With best wishes

Dear Parent/ Carer
I am writing regarding an opportunity for some of our students to get additional tuition for free, although this is an organisation that also offers paid tuition as well.
Although their claim of a 97% A*/A performance rate sounds a little unbelievable, I have heard very good things about the organisation from other schools, which is why I feel I should bring it to your attention.
For full details, please see their website - https://uplearn.co.uk/about/ - where there are full details of their scholarship programmes which students eligible for free school meals can access for free.
Please do take a look.

Dear Parent/Carer
Please note that your son’s/ daughter’s Attitude to Learning (AtL) report is now available to access via MCAS (under ‘Documents’). Please do look at this with them, and discuss what they think they might need to change in order to improve their AtL assessments further. (Obviously, if they have ‘Above & Beyond’ across all subjects, then they can simply be congratulated!)
Should you have any questions regarding this, please do not hesitate to contact Ms Wilkinson, the Year Leader for Yr 12.
Yours faithfully

Dear Parent/Carer
Please note that your son’s/ daughter’s Attitude to Learning (AtL) report is now available to access on MCAS (under ‘Documents’). Please do look at this with them, and discuss what they think they might need to change in order to improve their AtL assessments further. (Obviously, if they have ‘Above & Beyond’ across all subjects, then they can simply be congratulated!)
As communicated last year, in making their 5 university choices, students should ensure they select courses with a range of entry requirements between what might be regarded as their ‘best case scenario’ in Summer 2024 and their ‘worst case scenario’. So, if they are predicted BBB, they might select three courses that usually require BBB, one that requires BBC, and one that requires BCC/CCC.
Can I take this opportunity to remind you that all UCAS applications need to have been submitted by students by the end of the day on Monday 30th October. (Their application does not go to UCAS at this stage, but it allows us to do the necessary checking and processing before then sending it on.)
Should you have any questions regarding any of this, please do not hesitate to contact myself or Mr O’Neill, the Year Leader for Yr 13.
Yours faithfully

Dear Yr 13 Parents

This is a reminder that year 12 have work experience week from Monday 8th - Friday 12th July 2024.
As they are in year 12, students are responsible for finding their own placement and have had since September to do so. They have had reminders, hints and tips and have been provided with all the information needed to make this happen. Please do ask to see the Showbie folder if you wish to see the forms to complete.
With decisions about their next steps post 18 fast approaching, work experience is so important to help try something before making a commitment, whether that be to a degree, an apprenticeship or employment or training.
Any sort of workplace is experience, as skills and adapting yourself are such key elements. Even if a student walks away from the week having not particularly enjoyed what they did, that is still so important to know that path isn’t for them. Students are encouraged to think outside the box, and whilst some ideal placements are hard to get, there will be similar places using the same skills. For example Psychology placements can be hard to source, but placements using observations skills, listening, communication etc are still valuable so perhaps a primary school or care home would be suitable.
We believe that this opportunity is a very important one and helps students on their return to year 13. As such, we expect all of Year 12 to be out on placements (except those students on the Borneo trip).
Students have a folder on Showbie with all the forms they need to complete:
- Student confirmation form
- medical form
- employer confirmation sheet
Without these I cannot authorise placements, as it is during school time we are legally required to have this information.
Students are able to complete virtual placements, as long as they fill the 5 days and evidence of completion will be needed.
Thank you in advance for your support in getting your son/daughter to source their placements. Deadline needs to be end of June to allow me to process the forms.
Many thanks
Mrs L Stansbridge

Dear Parent/ Carer
Future Pathways – getting our students started
As your son/ daughter might have mentioned, I have started sending out emails to them regarding a range of opportunities to get them started on thinking about their pathway beyond Summer 2025. I have also spoken to them about building their super-curriculum, and they have resources to help them with this in Showbie. Although 2025 might seem a long way away, it is important they start to do some research and thinking now.
Careers Event: Friday 10th / Saturday 11th November
There is a good starting point coming up in the ‘What Career Live’ event at Olympia on 10th and 11th November. I have shared the link with students for them to sign up. They can leave a lunchtime on Friday 10th in order to attend. Please see the website for more details: https://www.whatcareerlive.co.uk/london-event
Taster Days and Open Days
A range of subject taster days are held online and in-person. Please see this link for details: https://www.ucas.com/events/exploring-university/learn-about-uni-taster-course. A complete listing of open days can be found here: https://www.ucas.com/ucas/events/find/scheme/virtual-and-digital/type/open-day.

Work Experience
Our Careers Lead, Mrs Stansbridge, has also already run a session for Yr 12 Students on Work Experience and CV writing. All the information they need has been shared with them via Showbie.
It is an expectation that all our Yr 12s arrange for themselves a week’s work experience from 8th to 12th July.
Please direct any work experience queries to careersiag@challoner.kingston.sch.uk
We will continue to do our best to support your son’s/ daughter’s journey into their future; should you have any queries regarding Future Pathways, then do please do get in touch.

Dear Parents,
As a school we are very proud of our wider curriculum offer and the excellent facilities we have at Challoner. We are only able to provide this offer and maintain these facilities thanks to generous parental donations to our school fund.
In recent years we have built a new two classroom block, a sports pavilion, a laser cutter for DT, instigated a whole school light replacement programme and refurbished a number of classrooms. None of this would have been possible without drawing down funds from our school fund.
Therefore, we ask all of our Sixth Form parents to pay a minimum monthly school fund donation of £20. A direct Debit can be set up by clicking through this link https://forms.gle/zx59oY37BdyfEkPj7
which will also ask if you are a UK tax payer, as we can also claim gift aid on your donation.
Thank you for your continued support for our school and our young people.
Yours sincerely,
Sean Maher
Headmaster
Dear parents,
Last week, students watched an inspirational presentation in school from an organisation called True Adventure. They organise life-changing adventures around the world for young people. What sets this apart from other school trips is that the students will have the added responsibility of raising funds for the adventure and the opportunity to plan the adventure and lead the team whilst in Borneo.
As we have new students joining in Year 12, we have decided to re-launch the trip for any students wishing to join the current team so they don't miss out on this opportunity.
This will be the fourth expedition the school has run with True Adventure having been to India, Peru, Ecuador and the Galapagos and Tanzania in 2015, 2017, 2019, and 2022. The adventure experience will provide them with a wealth of new skills which they will find invaluable in school, at university and in the world of work.
The students who saw the presentation have certainly had their eyes opened to the possibilities that lie ahead for them if they decide to take part. I would like to invite you to join us in school for an information evening, presented by True Adventure, where you too will have the opportunity to hear all about the amazing challenges that your child will have the chance to experience on our own school adventure.
The information evening will be held online on Monday 2nd October at 6.30pm.
Follow this link to join: https://teams.microsoft.com/dl/launcher/launcher.html?url=%2F_%23%2Fl%2Fmeetup-join%2F19%3Ameeting_ZDY2MDllYTYtZTgzNS00OGNhLThjMzktY2VjZTkzOGMyZThk%40thread.v2%2F0%3Fcontext%3D%257B%2522Tid%2522%253A%2522074443c7-947c-411a-96ff-6df162f1c151%2522%252C%2522Oid%2522%253A%252256372c13-813f-4bf3-a013-9ed176b0ecdc%2522%252C%2522IsBroadcastMeeting%2522%253Atrue%252C%2522role%2522%253A%2522a%2522%257D%26btype%3Da%26role%3Da%26anon%3Dtrue&type=meetup-join&deeplinkId=3648826e-4055-4903-a8ec-a12e3d87e09b&directDl=true&msLaunch=true&enableMobilePage=true&suppressPrompt=true
It will be an informative presentation lead by True Adventure's Tom Trueman, with plenty of opportunity for questions, along with images of the adventure and what it will be like to take part. We are very much looking forward to the evening and hope you are able to join us, will be inspired and help to get our adventure off the ground. There will also be lots of information on what they will do whilst overseas, the safety and back-up during the adventure, and the benefits they will derive from taking part.
We do hope you and your son and/or daughter are able to join. We are sure you will find it interesting and also see why the school values the outcomes of programmes like this.
Yours faithfully,
Miss L McDonald and Mr K McKenna
Whilst the system is called Bromcom, the Parent Portal is actually branded as MCAS (My Child at School).
The app for this can be downloaded from Google Play or the Apple Store and there is also a portal that can be accessed via a web browser.
The URL for the Parental Portal is: https://www.mychildatschool.com/
Setting / Resetting Password
To access the system for the first time or to reset your password, please click on the forgot password option and enter the email address you registered with the school.
Click on the link you are sent to reset (or set) your password and follow the instructions.
Once set, use your email address as the username and the password you have just set.
Sibling already in the school
If you already have another child in the school, your existing account should work for both children. In the top left-hand corner of the website or from the top of the menu in the app, tap on the student image and change child you wish to view.
If a sibling is not linked in Bromcom, please contact us using the email below and we will ensure the link is made.
What will I use MCAS for?
MCAS is being used to consolidate a number of systems and will be used for:
• Attendance monitoring
• Behaviour monitoring
• Timetables / Classes
• Purchases (trips, sale items etc.)
• Reports
• Sixth Form Café credit
• Homework
There is additional functionality that may be rolled out later this year.
In relation to the Sixth Form café, it is possible for students to pay using contactless cards / phones. However, if you add credit to their school account, they can also use their ID cards to purchase food from the café at morning break or lunchtime. What they are purchasing and their balance can be viewed via the MCAS app / website.
If you have followed the instructions above, but still experience issues accessing MCAS, please contact our Systems Manager via the school website.
Kind regards,
Mr Henderson
Deputy Head
