Dr. Tianjun Sun is currently an Assistant Professor of Industrial-Organizational Psychology and Quantitative Methods in the Department of Psychological Sciences and the Ken Kennedy Institute at Rice University. Before joining Rice, Dr. Sun was an Assistant Professor at Kansas State University for three years.
Dr. Sun received her Ph.D. in Industrial/Personality Psychology with a Quantitative Psychology minor from University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign in 2021. She also obtained her Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees from Illinois in both Psychology and Statistics.
Dr. Sun’s research primarily focuses on personnel selection, individual differences, psychometrics, and using advanced technology and quantitative methods to enhance staffing decisions, improve candidate/employee experiences, and solve organizational problems.
Dr. Sun is actively publishing in reputable and high-impact journal outlets, and her ongoing projects are supported by the National Science Foundation (NSF), the National Institutes of Health (NIH), and the Society for Industrial and Organizational Psychology (SIOP) Foundation.
Dr. Sun has been recognized as a Rising Star by the Association for Psychological Science (APS) and received a series of awards from SIOP, the American Psychological Association (APA), and the Academy of Management (AOM).
Dr. Sun served as an Editorial Fellow 2023-2024 and is now a Contributing Editor at Journal of Applied Psychology, and she is on the Editorial Boards of Organizational Research Methods, Human Performance, and Journal of Business and Psychology.
On the applied side, Dr. Sun has broad experience working in consulting, testing, and tech industries, as well as in areas of people analytics, learning and assessment, and talent management.
Ashley Sylvara graduated with her PhD in I/O Psychology from Kansas State University in 2025 and joined the University of Florida, Warrington College of Business as a post-doc. She is currently a research associate working with the lab. ✨
Ashley's research centers on improving personality assessment in personnel selection through the integration of artificial intelligence and machine learning. She is also interested in examining how work and life events influence personality development and change. Outside of research, Ashley likes to do rock climbing 🧗♀️

Moana Sargent is a fifth-year I/O Psychology doctoral student at Kansas State University.
Moana's research interests lie in occupational health and safety, with emphasis on stress management and identifying and addressing organizational faultlines. She's also interested in integrating NLP methods and OHP research. Moana's leisure interests include most outdoor activities, cooking strangely elaborate dinners, and spending too much time Zillow browsing.
If not an I/O psychologist, Moana would enjoy being an editor for a reality tv network ✍️
Christine Seitz is a fourth-year I/O Psychology doctoral student at Kansas State University.
Christine's research interests primarily include individual differences, psychological measurement, telework, and occupational health. Her applied experiences are broadly in consulting, particularly in people analytics and talent assessment. She has worked on projects with several organizations, including those in the manufacturing, healthcare, and financial industries.
Xavier Heron is a fourth-year I/O Psychology doctoral student at Rice University.
Xavier's research focuses on employing advanced statistical techniques and AI-tools to enhance the validity of non-cognitive ability assessments in selection settings. His dissertation research includes building a chatbot to integrate forced choice and text-based methods of measuring personality. Xavier is an avid Iowa State football and basketball fan.
Rebecca Chen is a fourth-year I/O Psychology doctoral student at Rice University.
Rebecca's research interests include psychological measurement and psychometrics, AI in talent management, and future of work skills. While in grad school, she has worked as a research consultant for ETS and as a people analytics intern for Google. Outside of work, Rebecca enjoys yoga, rock climbing, and baking.

Pengda Wang is a third-year I/O Psychology doctoral student at Rice University.
Pengda's primary research interests are centered around leveraging innovative technologies to enhance psychometric assessments and employee selection. Nikolai Ortiz is a first-year I/O Psychology doctoral student at Rice University. He graduated with a B.S. in Applied Mathematics and Psychology from Northwestern University. Nikolai’s research interests include the integration of artificial intelligence into the workplace (e.g., personnel selection, skill decay) and applied psychometrics. Outside of the lab, Nikolai competes in triathlons, marathons, open water swims, and other endurance races.
If not a I/O psychologist, Nikolai would be an instructor focused on making advanced topics in mathematics and statistics more accessible🧑🔬 The most random talent he has is being able to crochet stuffed animals🧶
Jack Eagle is a second-year I/O Psychology master's student at Rice University. Jack's professional interests lie in diversity, equity, and inclusion, with a focus on enhancing cross-cultural communication and collaboration in the workplace. Jack's favorite thing to do outside of school and work is cooking. He has most recently been learning how to make bagels, ravioli, and sushi.

Alexandra Armer is a first-year I/O Psychology master's student at Rice University. Alexandra's research interests are focused on psychometrics, personnel selection, and individual differences in the workplace. She is interested in leveraging psychometrics to enhance personnel selection, thereby improving both the hiring experience and role success for organizations and candidates. Outside of school, Alexandra enjoys traveling and spending time outdoors, especially when she can do both simultaneously.

Tania García-Jasso is a first-year I/O Psychology master's student at Rice University. Tania’s research interests include hiring and selection assessments, talent management, and advancing neurodiversity and disability inclusion in the workplace. As an aspiring research practitioner, she is excited to apply her research experience to create evidence-based solutions that improve both organizational effectiveness and employee well-being. Outside of work, Tania loves everything music-related (niche artists, concerts, production, DJing), as well as planting, cooking, and going to new cafes!

Xinyi Li
Xinyi is a junior at Rice, majoring in psychology and operations research. She is interested in the intersections of psychology, business, and technology.
In the SMART lab, Xinyi has worked on projects on NLP meta-analysis, ML and faking, leisure interests, chatbots (and this website!), which aligns with her interests in I/O psych. Outside of school and work, Xinyi enjoys reading, watching sci-fis, having spontaneous conversations with friends, and diving into random topics just for fun (lately, she's been learning about countries in the world!)
If not to become an I/O psychologist, Xinyi would be a world traveler -- to turn all that learning into real adventures and meet interesting people across the globe 🏞
Jenny In
Jenny is a sophomore at Rice majoring in psychology and statistics. She is broadly interested in individual differences and psychometrics. Her current work focuses on how personality change relates to work outcomes.
Outside of school and work, Jenny play and referee sports games. She also enjoys discovering new music.

Roxane Li
Roxane is a senior at the University of Michigan, majoring in psychology and cognitive sciences. She is currently interested in the intersection of clinical and I/O psychology, particularly how conversational AI can be used for mental health assessment and support. In the SMART lab, Roxane is working on the Vertex AI projects, where she is leading efforts to personalize conversational AI assessments, drawing on clinical psychology perspectives to better tailor responses to individual users. Outside of school and work, Roxane enjoys snowboarding, hip-hop music, and spending time with dogs 🐕
If not to become an I/O psychologist, Roxane would be a full-time snowboarder living somewhere with fresh powder, a large dog, and a Devon Rex ⛷
Toffy Chen
Toffy graduated from Davidson College with a double major in psychology and data science. She is interested in how individuals form, perceive, and respond to different forms of bias, considering a variety of social environments. She is also curious about how we interact with technology—and how these tools can support or hinder social connection and impression. She enjoys working with statistics and modeling and is actively building her skills in these areas.
In her free time, Toffy loves listening to music. It helps her relax, refocus, and recharge.
If not to be an I/O psychologist, Toffy would probably be a pet groomer. She finds joy in caring for animals.
Naci Konar-Steenberg
Naci is a senior at Oberlin College, majoring in politics and creative writing. He is participating in Dr. Sun's lab through the 2025 NSF REU program at Rice.
Naci is broadly interested in personality and individual differences, as well as the application of data science to problems in psychology.
Outside of school, Naci is a musician. He sings in an a cappella group and in several choirs at Oberlin, and he also play the piano. He's currently working on composing a musical.
The most random talent Naci has is memorizing random things. (The periodic table, train stations, digits of pi, etc...)
Heaven Ward
Heaven is a junior at Rice, majoring in psychology. She is participating in Dr. Sun's lab through the 2025 Rice SURF program.
Heaven is interested in research related to psychopathology, counseling, and treatment, particularly in how individuals differ in cognitive and behavioral patterns. She is also drawn to understanding the complexities of human interaction and how mental health manifests across different contexts.
Outside of work and school, Heaven enjoys weightlifting, cardio, reading, watching anime, writing poetry, traveling, and learning new languages.
The most random talent Heaven has is that she is surprisingly good at beating her sister in rock-paper-scissors, and she can make a solid meal out of whatever’s in someone’s kitchen, no matter how fancy (or not) the ingredients are!
