Visual Arts

Digital Photography

10th -12th grade

Digital Photography helps to develop competency in the digital darkroom through lessons and projects that teach photographic concepts, composition, and principles of 2-dimensional design. Students will be required to keep their own portfolio through a process that includes research, practice and reflection.

Advanced Digital Photography

This course is designed for students who completed Digital Photography. Students will continue to develop and build on their digital photography camera skills, as well as their use of Photoshop and Lightroom. Projects will be both fine art and commercial art based. 

Prerequisite: Pass Digital Photography with "C" or higher

Art 1

This VAPA aligned,college prep class focuses on studio projects of selected artworks, artists, cultural and historical phenomena and aesthetics. Different media is explored including drawing, painting, collage, sculpting, paper mâché and printmaking.

Art 2

10th -12th grade

This college prep course  further explores a wide spectrum of media to include drawing, painting, college, sculpture paper mache and printmaking.  

Prerequisite:  Pass Art 1 with a "C" or higher

Animation

10th -12th grade

Animation I is a revised course that exposes students to the skills concepts and theories in animation in an artist-scholar mindset that includes the integration of technical abilities, reading, writing and reflection with the incorporation of computer technology.

Note: 9th graders welcome if Advanced Art was passed in middle school & requires teacher approval.

Advanced Animation

 The course focuses on advanced techniques of animation and script writing, story boarding and character design and camera technology, lighting, sound and editing.

Prerequisite: Pass Animation with "C" or higher.

Note: 10th graders welcome if Animation was passed in 9th grade.

Drawing/Painting

10th -12th grade

Students are exposed to basic two dimensional drawing and painting skills, techniques, history, theories, and ideologies.  Although art making is a dominant component in the class, there is an artist-scholar mindset where reading, writing and the ability to communicate ideas and opinions are also major goals.

Printmaking and Graphic Design

10th -12th grade

Students will learn about the basics of graphic design and printmaking to express original art combining typography, page layout, and integrated graphic elements within the printmaking language.

Art History

This is a college prep course that familiarizes students with the different concepts   of the visual arts from cave painting to contemporary images.  It involves extensive reading, writing and making works fo art based on styles and cultures that are studied.

AP Art History

This course provides students with an overview of the development of art concepts from a historic perspective to prepare students for the AP Art History exam.

Studio Art

10th -12th grade

This college prep course is for students who have successfully completed Art I, Art II, or Drawing & Painting. The focus is primarily on the development of 2D media, understanding the artistic process, and the exploration of a variety of approaches in art making.  

Prerequisite: One of the following courses passed with "C" or higher: Art 1, Animation, Art 2, Drawing & Painting.

AP 2-D Art and Design (AP Studio Art)

This college prep AP course is for serious students interested in art. It involves the rigorous study of the artistic process, exploration and articulation of concepts and ideas, and the development of a portfolio that serves as the AP Exam. The work is focused on a variety of 2D media both assigned by the teacher and chosen by the student

Prerequisite: Passed multiple art classes or get teacher approval.

AP Drawing (AP Studio Art)

This college prep AP course is for serious students interested in art. It involves the rigorous study of the artistic process, exploration and articulation of concepts and ideas, and the development of a portfolio that serves as the AP Exam. The work is focused on Drawing media, techniques, and skills.

Ceramics

  10th -12th grade

This VAPA aligned college prep course explores a variety of ceramic sculptural experiences.  Form and function are highlighted  with emphasis on how ceramics and related arts have influenced mankind's cultural, social and economic development.

Advanced Ceramics

This course further develops the skills, techniques, and aesthetic sensibilities of students, including fundamental concepts, historical and contemporary references, art criticism, and creative expression.


Prerequisite: Passed Ceramics with "C" or higher

Theater

Theater 1

This VAPA aligned college prep course teaches theater and basic experience in performance.  Students study theatrical history, receive performing techniques, develop vocal projections and physical expression, and learn about the production crew.

Improv Comedy

This course gives students who possess intermediate and advanced acting skills a balanced theatre education. It focuses on improvisational comedy, the history of comedy and its cultural significance, and comedy to contemporary theatre relationship.

Stage Production

This course is a practical application of play production from concept to actualization on the stage. Students will focus on one or more of the following production aspects of the theatre: set design and construction, makeup, properties management, stage management, technical theatre including lights and sound, costume design, and performance.

Music

String Orchestra 1

This class gives beginning violin, viola, cello, and bass players a well-rounded music education. It includes basic string pedagogy, a knowledge of music history and string orchestra repertoire.  Attendance required at rehearsals and all performances.

String Orchestra 2

The class gives intermediate and advanced string players advanced technical string pedagogy, knowledge of music history and performance of superior string orchestra repertoire.  Attendance required at rehearsals and all performances.

Guitar

This class gives students the skills they need to play guitar at a proficient level. They will learn about different music styles, how to better listen and understand what they are playing and to get performing experience.

Wind Ensemble

This college prep course is for more advanced instrumental musicians. Students learn the theory and history of the music, and perform intermediate to advanced level literature from various styles and cultures. Class can be taken for repeat credit.

Marching Band (Zero Period)

Through standards based instruction, the goals of Marching Band  include proficiency in musical concepts and ideas and an understanding of musical aesthetics by performing varied styles of music and repertoire. The students will be able to perform and analyze music through various competitions.  Can be taken for PE credit for 10th grade and above as long as 9th grade PE has been taken.

Music Appreciation

 Music Appreciation offers students, with or without prior music experience, a fundamental knowledge of music history and theory from the Ancient, Medieval, Renaissance, Baroque, Classical, Romantic, 20th Century, and contemporary eras. Students learn to value music in a variety of genres, styles, eras, languages, and cultures.

Concert Choir

Students learn to use a three to six- part choral music and focus on choral techniques, music theory, listening exercises and exams, note and pitch relationship, and pitch memory, using solfage.  Attendance mandatory at extra rehearsals and performances.

Treble Choir (7th Period)

This college prep course is for Soprano I & II and Alto I & II students. Topics include intermediate to advanced forms of treble choral literature, theory from various areas of music history, and the culture of the music performed. Attendance is mandatory at extra rehearsals and performances.

Chamber Choir/Madrigals

This college prep class performs intermediate to advanced forms of choral literature from various eras of music theory.  Focus is on the theory, history and culture of the music performed. Attendance mandatory at extra rehearsals and performances.
