The Waikato Trades Academy (WTA) offers secondary students the unique opportunity to study at both school and Wintec. The WTA gives students a head start by providing specific, practical experience and skills in an industry-based setting. This allows them to move directly into a job, apprenticeship, or further study upon completion of secondary school.
As a WTA student, you'll enroll in one of the available programmes in addition to your current school subjects. You'll typically travel to Wintec campuses one day a week for practical, hands-on learning. Please be aware that this day could be any day of the week and will mean you miss other school classes on that day. The programme runs for the full year, so please keep this commitment in mind when applying.
This is also a fantastic opportunity to explore potential career pathways in a hands-on environment. You'll get a real taste of what a specific industry is like, helping you make informed decisions about your future studies or career direction. It's a cool way to discover if a trade or vocational path is the right fit for you! Courses that may be available next year are listed below.
These vocational pathways offer a clear route to achieving NCEA Levels 1, 2, and 3, and help develop pathways that lead to further study, training, and employment. They provide a framework that demonstrates how learning and achievement are valued in the workplace by aligning your studies with the skills needed for various industries.
