English Version Below
Let us start rebuilding」。

Year 2021 is the celebration year for the 30th Anniversary of Richmond Hill (Chinese) Baptist Church. Even though we are still under the shadow of the pandemic, we cannot stop giving our thanks to God the Father, the praise of the Lord Jesus, and the trust of the Holy Spirit. Our mood is still joyful as we look back on the past days, regardless of the mountain top and valleys, the ups and downs, joys and sorrows; these have become marks of the grace from the above. We trust that our faithful Father, the Lord Jesus of the Church and the guidance of the Holy Spirit would allow RHCBC to move forward and have great developments. Remember that the Lord Jesus said: “Truly, truly, I say to you, whoever believes in me will also do the works that I do; and greater works than these will he do, because I am going to the Father.” (John 14:12) In order to do greater work, we solely rely on God as “I (we) can do all things through Him who strengthens me (us).” (Phil. 4:13) and “But you (we) will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you (us), and you (we) will be my (His) witnesses … and to the end of the earth.” (Acts 1:8)
While the church is celebrating its 30th anniversary, we will continue to use "Worthy of Our Calling” as the theme for 2021. Let us understand that we are all Christians and the disciples of Jesus Christ who have been called out to bear witness to the Lord. To help us to become disciples of Jesus Christ, pastors and leaders spent a lot of time in the past year praying, waiting, and discussing how the church understands God's will for the future. God is faithful. He said: “Ask and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you. For everyone who asks receives; the one who seeks finds; and to the one who knocks, the door will be opened.” (Matthew 7:7-8) In light of this, we revised the church’s Mission statement, established our Vision and Core Values so that we understand the purpose, vision and focus of the church’s existence.
We exist to exalt the Lord our God by making disciples of all nations and building healthy churches. (Matt. 28:19-20)
A church that offers Intentional Discipleship, Intercultural Fellowships, Impactful Ministries, and Intergenerational Worship. (Acts 2:42-27)
Right Reverence – Exalt and Glorify (Rom. 12:1-2)
Holy Habit – Study and Walk (Jos. 1:8)
Caring Community – Love and Care (Eph. 4:2-3)
Biblical Beseeching – Ask and Answer (Phil. 4:6)
Confessing Christ – Show and Tell (Matt. 28:19-20)
Church theme in 2020 was “Worthy of Our Calling” as the pastors took the book of Ephesians as the topic of sermon. Although this theme will continue in 2021, in the atmosphere of celebrating the 30th anniversary, the pastoral staff saw that God wants the church to rebuild, whether it is a 25-year-old building, but also a rebuilding of spiritual life. With this in mind, Nehemiah is a very fitting book for the church to study, as Nehemiah 2:18 says, "Let us start rebuilding." The message of rebuilding the saints will be shared throughout the year's sermons, so that the congregation can understand the true meaning of the message, our mission, vision and core values, and how to focus more on the ministry, and work together to do greater things for the future of the church. Brothers and sisters need to pray steadfastly, and walk together with one heart on the path that pleases the Lord.
How does RHCBC celebrate its 30th Anniversary? First and foremost is the 30-days prayer. The content starts with how RHCBC began to the present, then ask the Heavenly Father to give a vision to lead the church forward (Prov. 29:18). Thank God as I learn that brothers and sisters pray for these things every day during the month of January. I give thanks to the Lord from the bottom of my heart as they never stop praying for the church. (Please refer to the Prayers list attached.)
At the same time, we will do seven things to testify to God's leadership of the church in the past, today, and in the future, to give thanks and look forward. (Please refer to the picture attached)
Invite Past Pastors Back to Preach - We invited pastors who have served in this church, brothers and sisters in this church who became pastors, and outside speakers to come back to the big family of RHCBC to share the word of God. Thankfully, God used them greatly, and they gave us great learning from the teachings of the Bible and how God shaped them in serving the Lord.
Photo Album & Personal Testimonies - Due to the epidemic, the congregation cannot return to the church to take photos of individuals or families, but we can use individuals, families, and small groups to send text messages, videos, etc. to the church, and broadcast them before Sunday worship. Thank God! The weekly broadcast didn't end until the end of November, seeing God doing great things in our church, and His grace was sufficient; the congregation's blessings for the church strengthened our sense of belonging to this church.
Souvenirs - A very beautiful, eco-friendly, reusable bento box (30th anniversary printed) for the congregation. The box is equipped with a knife, a fork and a spoon, which are very practical and convenient. Actually, we can choose from 3 different colors, which is a very good and thoughtful idea.
Church Renovation - Due to the continuation of the epidemic, the huge project could not be carried out, but the library at ground floor was relocated to the basement and combined with the choir room, so that the ground floor room felt enlarged, allowing people to have a little more space for friendship there. As for other projects, we will make plans after the Pandemic is over.
Heritage Wall - This Heritage Wall can show the history of this church, and let us look back on God's gratitude for His guidance and leadership from the past to today. It is also impossible to carry out due to the epidemic situation, and it needs to be left to make arrangements after the epidemic situation is over.
Dinner Banquet - This is what the congregation is looking forward to, because not only can they enjoy a great feast, but they can also witness and praise God's work and blessings on RHCBC in different seasons. But it was also forced to cancel due to the Pandemic, and we were a little upset. But God has His will among us. During our prayers, God moved us to use the budget of the banquet as a channel to bless the community. The “A Cup of Water” campaign came into being to help those in need in the community. Honestly, just as God blessed Abraham, and through him he blesses all nations. Thankful and it’s amazing!
Special Church Theme - The pastors took a day of retreat and every Tuesday staff meetings to seek the will of God. Through constant prayer, waiting, and discussion, God has given us Colossians 3:23, and set the theme of the church in 2022 as "Fully Engaged with Christ". To be fully engaged or committed to Christ, Christ’s disciples must learn from Christ. So we will choose the Gospel of John as the sermon book to bring this theme to life in the disciples. Thank God for the grace so that RHCBC continues marching into 2022.
The joy of 30th Anniversary cannot be stopped even though the Pandemic was still on. Although the government limited the capacity of meetings, we were able to have our first Baptism ceremony (58th) which is performed at the church parking lot. Brother Qin Shao was the candidate. In addition, we had Baby/Toddler Dedication ceremony took place at parking lot. Those baby/toddlers are: August Cheng (Dad & Mom: Brian & Sarah), Nolan Ka-Chun Chan (Dad & Mom: Clement & Shirley), Rachel Keira Ho (Dad & Mom: Josh & Stacey).
With regard to the pastoral team, thanks to God’s grace and the recognition of the members, Brother Yao of the Mandarin group officially became a full-time pastor of the Mandarin group of the church in the 4th QMM, 2020. In the past, Pastor Yao established good relationships with brothers and sisters, his preaching and teaching were good in accordance with the Bible and had good interactions with the pastoral leadership team. He is convinced that the Mandarin group will also have greater development in the future. In addition, Brother Heusen Lam, a pastoral intern in our Youth group, graduated from Tyndale Seminary in December 2020 with a Master of Divinity. He has served in this church for the past two years, helping a group of young people grow up with the Bible, encouraging and challenging them to live out their faith. He officially became full-time pastor with the blessings from brothers and sisters in the 1st QMM 2021. God’s grace is abundant, we have added Pastor William Wong in the pastoral team, approved at the 2nd QMM. He focuses on the Cantonese congregation and young parents’ group. We thanked God for providing 6 pastors to shepherd different age, language, and cultural groups. Pray that we continue to serve as a team in unity. We thank God for giving us this pastoral team to serve with one heart and one mind and do the mission entrusted by God. With God’s leading, pastor Cindy left our pastor team to move on to further her ministry at Living Water Counselling Centre. We thanked her for 4 ½ years of dedicated service in RHCBC and be sure God continues to bless her in the day ahead.
The annual anniversary celebration is a climax. Due to the increase of pastoral staff, the church's 30th anniversary thanksgiving worship and Pastoral Induction ceremony came into being. Even though the Pandemic has limited the number of attendees, we can still worship and give thanks together through the internet on May 30. Thanks to Dr. Dennis Ngien for bringing us the message, encouraging us to move forward, and also for the Pastoral Induction ceremony to encourage pastors to serve the Lord faithfully and to live out the characteristics of a good shepherd. We also pay tribute to the serving staff of the praise group, audio-visual team, choir, etc. Their hard work has added a lot of color to this celebration, allowing us to enjoy worship and thanksgiving.
In addition, I would like to thank Brother Eric Ng for writing and composing the song "Look Up" for the church's 30th anniversary. The lyrics and rhythm appropriately refer to the church's ups and downs. But God is always with us, walking with us through the broad avenues and the valley paths.
It is worth mentioning or writing in the church history book: on the anniversary day, a toilet on the ground floor of the church leaked water, and even flooded, affecting the baby/nursery room in the basement, causing great damage. Thanks to the brothers in the church for the immediate clean-up of the flood, the prayers of the brothers and sisters, the immediate response from the insurance company, the professionalism and hard work of the maintenance workers, who repaired or replaced the damaged ones, and now both rooms can be used, let us learn to cherish this church building things, and pray to God the Father a lot for the people and things of the church.
Church office: Our Office Administrator, Sister Valentine Chiu, who has served God and us for 27 years, retired at the end of last year. Even though we miss her, we still want to say "Thank you" to her. She has been faithful for many years and has indeed helped the church a lot. In the future, she will continue to serve the Lord in different ways. May God bless her and her family.
News from Joshua Seniors Fellowship that I served: Rebecca Kao, Sui-Mui Ho-Mak, Ping Yee Wong, Wing Shing Ip, Mai Cheong Wong, Stanley Wong (from Mandarin group) went to their eternal home, now are resting in the Lord. We miss them so much, however, we look forward to meeting them in the future together in the heavenly home. This is our hope. (1 Thess. 4:13-18)
Newborns: Thank God for giving new lives in the family. Those are Rachel Ho(Dad & Mom: Josh & Stacey); Nolan Chan(Dad & Mom: Clement & Shirley); Candace Fung(Dad & Mom: Lawrence & Marisa); Hazel Kwok(Dad & Mom: Michelle & Anthony); Charis and Colette Cheung(Dad & Mom: Jeannie & Peter); Peyton Lum(Dad & Mom: Grace & Matthew; Grandpa & Grandma: Andrew & Elsa Chan).
Wedding Bells: Stacy Ma & Elliott Lam; Elijah Wong & Irene Lau; Angel Chan & Kevin Wong; Jordon Chu & Linda Lu; Kenny Ho & Olivia Chan; Timothy Moy & Anne Lin; Tiffany Ng & Geoffrey Ip. Congratulations!
Joint Good Friday Worship was successfully held on April 2nd. The topic is "The Cross of Calvary". Three pastors preached in their comfortable language and worked together to share its subtopics: Anti-Climax, Anxiety, and Anticipation. Thank you to the praise team and the choir for taking the time to rehearse so that the entire gathering can integrate its content with the speaker's message. Of course, the audio-visual team should take credit for the coordination of the entire program.
We invited Dr. Andrew Ma from Los Angeles, USA to be our speaker for church “Revival Meeting” and “Mission Sunday.” In addition, Dr. Ma also shared his pastoral journey with the pastoral staff and encouraged us to serve the Lord faithfully. He also shared and exhorted with church leaders how to serve the Lord, which has benefited us a lot. These gatherings are held at the church on August 15-22. (Please refer to Speaker’s list for the topics)
Joint Christmas worship was also successfully held on December 19. Sermon title: "The Measure of God's Love", three pastors in different languages worked together to share its subtopics: Purpose, Cost, and Effect. Once again, thank you to the praise team, choir, video and welcoming team for serving in conjunction with the speaker's message.
Going through 2021 (celebrating the 30th anniversary) amid the Pandemic is really not easy. Due to the repeated outbreak of the epidemic, the church must also follow the government's health guidelines. The reopening of the church is of course exciting, however, it must be closed (no physical worship, only online) so as not to be discouraged because we know that God's message will not be affected by these. As we believe and be assured that the gospel is the power of God, and through different channels, God still speaks to us today. We should be thankful that in the past year there was worship on every Sunday, and brothers, sisters and friends all worshipped the Triune God on Sundays. We are grateful for the brothers and sisters who love the church and God: the total offering of the church in 2021 is $863,209.56, which is more than our budget; we also thank God for His provision, who is Jehovah Jireh (Genesis 22:14).
Finally, from the individual to the group, we still need to improve, grow, and serve in many areas so that the life we live is worthy of our calling. May God help us to be a blessings to those around us. May God move us to have more praying – attending prayer meetings, reading the Bible diligently – our daily habit, serving Him for the glory of God, and willing to share – the salvation of Jesus Christ.
May we encourage each other, and the glory be to God.
