Inquiry English offers current grade nine Inquiry Academy students as well as newly interested students the opportunity to choose a tenth grade English class in the inquiry model. The class is designed to provide self-directed and self-motivated students with a more individualized education. This approach allows them the opportunity to focus on and explore areas of interest with an emphasis on communication, collaboration, creativity and innovation through inquiry, research, and problem-based learning. In this course, students will have the opportunity to critically read/view, respond to, analyze and evaluate a variety of literary works from all genres. In addition, students broaden writing skills by employing the writing process to create informative, argumentative, narrative, and literary analysis essays. Specific instruction will focus on essay structure, development, and patterns of organization to support writing. A variety of activities such as class discussions, student-led discussions, and individual and group presentations help students refine speaking and listening skills as they take ownership of their learning process. To be successful, students must be independent and highly motivated learners who are willing to grapple with complex issues.
