In cases of 'high risk' domestic abuse/violence , why is it that the victim is the one who is treated like the criminal?
it is the VICTIM who is taken away from any existing support network they may have
it is the VICTIM who is moved into a 'refuge' with little or no property and belongings
it is the VICTIM who is made to experience the trauma of uprooting their life, while already suffering trauma from the abusive relationship
it is the VICTIMS (children) who are made to leave their schools and peer groups, often the only consistent thing they know
Attempting to handle the problem of domestic abuse in this way is wrong. The current model is costly to both public services and the mental health and wellbeing of the victims involved.
If perpetrators are charged, once they are released the first thing they will do is target the victim in an attempt to harass, intimidate, threaten and regain control over them.
.......and people ask the question, 'why did they stay?'
This is why Resolute women's support group are campaigning for UK Parliament to initiate and enforce the introduction of a 'Tag & App' system for DA/DV perpetrators, minimising further trauma to the VICTIM.
The 'Tag & App' system would work by a tagging device being placed on the perpetrator, whilst an app is also installed into the victims mobile device. This would alert the victim if the abuser was to enter a specified proximity around them. This alert would give the victim time to ensure that they and their children are safe and supported until Police are able to intervene. This system would also provide the evidence required if an abuser breaches their conditions or commits a criminal offence.
This system would also very much reduce the victims anxiety; the security that the same colour car driving up & down the street is not the perpetrator, the security that the person walking towards them in the same coat is not the perpetrator. The security that their children are safe in school without worry of the perpetrators actions.
Why should a victim of domestic abuse be restricted from freedom, after working so hard to finally break free?
