Welcome Back to Life
2021-2022
2021-2022
The DTA Garden Arts program is designed to be a place where the students can celebrate nature and feel welcome in the richly biodiverse garden that grows here at DTA.
The motto is: Welcome to LIfe.
Our goal is to care for and respect all living things.
Students are given the opportunity to witness the intersection of the seasons, our microclimate, the ecosystems, and human impact in real time. Students will learn how to work in harmony with the garden and be expected to participate daily in the care and maintenance of it and the classroom. The values that students will learn and apply in this hands-on learning environment are: Stewardship, WORK ETHIC, Mindfulness, Empathy, and Practice.
Because we are dealing with COVID restriction all students maintain static groups within their homeroom (including pods) and enrichment teachers will be assigned a homeroom. This is a great opportunity to build relationships with each of the DTA Enrichment teachers and their programs. Below is the Garden enrichment rotation schedule for the following grades.
Grades 5-8 (~3 week rotations)
August 17 - September 3: 7th - No GARDEN, 6th Spelhouse, 5th Miami
September 7 - September 24: 7th Columbia, 6th Tuskegee, 5th Arkasas
Grade 3-4 (~6 week rotations) 4th LSU & 3rd Southern
Take this Survey and help us understand what you would like to see more of from our cafeteria. This also helps us see what you really don't like so we don't waste it.
Please take your time, this is a chance to use your voice and tell us what you like to eat and what you don't like to eat.
We can't always get everything we want but we don't want to waste what we do have. If you don't like something you probably won't eat it. The goal is to try to eat something that looks a plant or animal everyday.

It's important to know WHICH caterpillars sting and which don't here in Louisiana. So, how to know?
LSU AgCenter has some incredible information for nature lovers in our state. This publication shows which ones will sting and what months they are around.
Stinging Caterpillars in Louisiana
Next week I will post some pictures of a look alike caterpillar to some stinging caterpillars, but first, get to know the 4 here in our state. It is time to start looking out for these 4 because their sting can be very painful.

Pictured here is a Monarch Butterfly - she is enjoying some time on this Giant Milkweek (Calotropis gigantea) flower and likely laying eggs under the leaves! Look out for next weeks update on our Monarch Habitats. This milkweed plant is growing in the neighborhood where I live. It is over 9 feet tall - think of how many monarch caterpillars can eat from this giant! Nature is cool!
