The Relay Connecticut Alternate Route to Certification program is a part-time, non-credit bearing residency program designed for non-certified staff members employed within partner schools across the state of Connecticut. During the first year of the program, candidates complete Relay coursework and are eligible for Connecticut State teaching licensure. After successfully completing coursework requirements and passing certification exams, candidates receive additional instructional coaching and receive support with the edTPA, a robust portfolio assessment required by the State of Connecticut.
To obtain Initial Educator certification in the state of Connecticut, teacher candidates must complete an approved educator preparation program and specific coursework for the certification endorsement area(s). In addition, teaching candidates must demonstrate essential skills and subject knowledge by passing the appropriate statewide teaching licensure assessments.
Relay provides support in the certification process by communicating all certification requirements to students, providing all required coursework, maintaining individual certification files, and approving eligible candidates’ applications for a Resident Educator Certificate after successful completion of the one year program and successful completion of certification exams. Candidates are supported with their application to transition from the Resident Educator Certificate to the Initial Educators certificate after successful submission of their edTPA portfolio.
It is the expectation of the Relay Connecticut Alternate Route to Certification program that all students will pass their licensure exams (Praxis II for Secondary candidates and Praxis II and Foundations of Reading for Elementary candidates) on or before June 30, 2020.
