You must be at least 16 years old to apply. If your under 18 you must obtain a “School Compliance Verification” form from the applicant’s school.
Apply on the website for the written test: Click HERE
Scroll down and click the link labeled “Driver’s license, CDL, or Motorcycle Written (Permit Test).”
Select appointment location according to the county in which you reside. Jefferson County has only one testing center, so you must select “Jefferson County (Bowman Field) Written test.” You will be rejected if you try to apply in a different county from where you reside.
If there are no available appointments, you must wait until 8:00am on Friday morning for the following 2-3 week appointments to open up for you. Once you see an available appointment at that time, select a day and time that they offer which works for you. You must submit a name, telephone number, and an email address to receive the appointment confirmation number. Save this email.
Get your documents ready
You will need to bring your: Social Security card, proof of residency (this can be a utility bill with their name and address on it), and work permit card. If the applicant does not have one of these, then check here for approved alternatives.
Study for the test
There are no other translations available, only English. But applicants may TEST in Persian (not Dari yet), and other languages if preferred. If someone cannot read they may ask to take the test aurally. Search HERE for more details.
Appointment Day
Arrive at the DMV appointment 15 minutes early.
Bring all the required documents: work permit card, social security card, and proof of address.
Bring a debit or credit card. There will be a $30 fee for a "Blue Letter" (this is a document that every non-citizen/non-resident must obtain to take the test).
Take the written test
You will take a brief vision test, in which you will be asked to read some numbers.
You will then take the written test. You must answer 32 out of 40 questions right to pass. If you fail, reschedule another appointment online and study harder for the test.
If you pass, they will immediately direct you to receive your temporary driver’s permit (a paper copy) and pay for your driver’s permit hard copy which is $15. Be ready to show your same documents. They will give you instructions on what content to study for the Road Test appointment before you leave.
Schedule your Road Test online (must be 30 days after you receive your permit) They will tell you what day you are eligible for the Road test. Click HERE at 8:00 on Friday morning.
Select “Driver’s License Road Test Appointments.”
Scroll down and select “Jefferson County (Bowman Field)- Road Test.”
Pick the date and time that works for you, but make sure you select a date that is on or after your 30-day permit period.
