Appalachia Unveiled
Appalachia Unveiled
The Power Hour students have been researching fungi, and we had experts who run a mushroom farm in West Portsmouth, called Appalachia Unveiled, visit the classroom to help us deepen our understanding of fungi and its benefits and answer our many questions. Dan and Bailey Smith helped students build their knowledge in more ways than I ever imagined! They graciously provided materials to grow our own Lion's Mane mushrooms in the classroom, so keep watching for updates on our mini-mushroom lab!
Fungi Research
Fungi Research
Students were able to dissect a Baby Bella mushroom, giving them background knowledge about the parts of a mushroom before professional mushroom farmers visited our classroom. It was amazing to see how excited the students were to identify parts of a mushroom they had never really noticed before. Students are now creating their own mushroom diorama, displaying what they learned about fungi along our research journey.

Albinism and Adaptation
We read about animals that have albinism and how difficult it is to adapt to their environment when compared to animals with natural pigmentation. To extend this learning, students researched an animal of interest studying about their environment and predators. Students had to design their habitat on paper then start building it in a diorama. To emphasize the difficulty animals with albinism face when trying to survive, students have to include one animal of natural pigmentation as well as one dealing with albinsim.
Our next phase is to create a Google Slides presentation embedding pictures of our entire design process with interesting facts they identified.
Enjoy viewing the pictures of students building their dioramas.
The next two videos are two brave students that were willing to share with you what they are creating inside their diorama.
