Above : Students are creating their first bridge prototype from the design they sketched. We started this project with the book Iggy Peck, Architect written by Andrea Beatty. Iggy and his classmates run into trouble when a footbridge collapses after they crossed it to get to an island. To help Iggy, the students have designed a bridge that needs to span 12". They will test the strength of the bridges the next session and discuss ways to improve their designs.

IMG_1139.MOVIMG_1044.MOVIMG_1043.MOVIMG_1130.MOVIn my 4th grade Power Hour, we read about animals that have albinism and how difficult it is to adapt to their environment when compared to animals with natural pigmentation. To extend this learning, students researched an animal of interest studying about their environment and predators. Students had to design their habitat on paper then start building it in a diorama. To emphasize the difficulty animals with albinism face when trying to survive, students have to include one animal of natural pigmentation as well as one dealing with albinsim.
Our next phase is to create a Google Slides presentation embedding pictures of our entire design process with interesting facts they identified.
