Carnivorous Plants!
Our recent focus has been studying carnivorous plants. We have two Venus Flytraps in the classroom and have read articles in Super STEM as well as a book on these meat-eating plants. Students are now using their knowledge to create their own carnivorous plant focusing on the trapping mechanism to catch their prey. Students will create a display identifying the Engineering Design Process being used in the plant creation.
Computer Programming:
Students were introduced to basic computer science concepts of sequencing, debugging, algorithm, and programming. To begin they directed the teacher to draw a picture of a cat's face. This did not go well in the beginning. Ask your child about this! Next, they learned to use sequencing words properly when acting as the computer programmer giving input to the "robot." The "robot" had to perform exactly as directed and ran into many bugs along the way. Students had to work on debugging their code to direct the robot correctly. Enjoy the pictures below demonstrating the progress students made!

Sea Creatures Habitats
In 3rd grade Power Hour, we read about seahorses, their adaptations to their habitat, and how they overcome predators and environmental impacts. Afterwards, students researched an aquatic animal they were interested in and learned how to create a habitat for their animal. After designing their habitat on paper, they worked on building a diorama to represent their aquatic animal in its "natural" habitat.
Our next phase is to create a Google Slides presentation embedding pictures of our entire design process with interesting facts they identified.
Enjoy seeing the pictures and videos of students building their dioramas.
