Roles and Responsibilities
2020: A Year of Transformation
If I had to pinpoint a year of profound personal and professional growth as a teacher, 2020 stands out as a pivotal turning point for me. While the pandemic brought challenges and changes to many, I found myself adapting with remarkable ease. I attribute much of this adaptability to my spiritual foundation and the strength I draw from mindfulness practices. As a result, I introduced mindfulness lessons during the mentor sessions in Grade 4, an endeavour that proved highly beneficial.
Another initiative I championed was the introduction of a weekly affirmation, encouraging children to write it down and share it with each other. The feedback from parents indicated that these mindfulness lessons and affirmations were not only beneficial to the students but also served as a source of support for parents.
Additionally, I played a key role in the concept of maintaining an open virtual connection for students who continued to learn online after we had returned to in-person classes. This innovation ensured that no student was left behind and allowed for seamless education delivery.
To enhance the online learning experience, I delved into researching various pedagogical models that enabled engaging collaborative activities, allowing students to interact, exchange ideas, and collaborate across different virtual classrooms and platforms.
I discovered that my creativity thrived under pressure, and I eagerly embraced challenges as opportunities to showcase my innovative side.
Furthermore, I provided support to my colleagues during the pandemic by sending them supportive and light-hearted check-in texts to ensure their well-being.
One of my core beliefs is that kindness is paramount, and I consider it my responsibility to foster a culture of kindness not only within my classroom but also beyond its boundaries.
Grade 4 Class teacher
I am a Grade 4 class teacher, and I thrive on collaboration within my teaching team as we collectively plan our subjects. We hold dedicated planning sessions where each of us contributes to the planning process, with one team member responsible for compiling the term's preparation.
My specific responsibilities include overseeing the Mindfulness and Inquiry preparation, which I find incredibly rewarding. This role allows me to embrace various pedagogical models in my classroom, fostering an interactive and engaging learning environment:
Student-centered learning environments
Inquiry-based learning
Interactive learning stations
Collaborative tasks
These teaching methods emphasize the importance of:
Modeling as we teach
Embracing the learning process, including making and learning from mistakes
Encouraging teamwork and peer-to-peer learning
Integrating technology into our lessons
Utilising graphic organisers like thinking maps
The highlight of my year is undoubtedly my class assembly, where I witness the children bringing our collective ideas to life.
In addition to my classroom responsibilities, I take pride in my role as a leader within my grade. I actively support and empower my colleagues, infusing creativity into our teaching methods to make learning both enjoyable and memorable. While I consider myself a leader, I strongly believe in leading from behind, allowing others to feel empowered and take the lead.
I also dedicate time to Tutorial lessons, where I work one-on-one with children who require extra support in Mathematics and English. These sessions are engaging and fun, where games to reinforce classroom learning.
In addition, I host the Junior Art Club, a popular activity that sometimes has more interest than capacity. In this club, I create a nurturing environment where children can freely express themselves through art. The preparation for this club includes designing a PowerPoint presentation about the artist, procuring materials, and guiding the students throughout the creative process.
While I'm passionate about extending kindness and care to both students and staff, I regret that our TLC (Teacher-Learner Committee) has been discontinued. I believe that teachers, too, can benefit from acts of kindness and compassion, especially during the stressful periods of the school year. While some may argue that I can't change people, I firmly believe that modeling this behavior can ultimately lead to success in fostering a culture of kindness and empathy within our school community.
