Modern Foreign Languages

'If you talk to a man in a language he understands, that goes to his head. If you talk to him in his own language, that goes to his heart' Nelson Mandela

The aim of the MFL Faculty is to create an atmosphere that stimulates students' interest, where they participate and are eager to learn and develop a positive attitude to the learning of languages and culture.

Students are assessed on arrival in Year 7 and placed in groups based on their mathematical ability. Our programme of study builds upon and consolidates the learning at Primary level and also extends and challenges students to prepare them for the demands of the new GCSE course which they begin in Year 9.

As an EBACC subject, all students must study MFL to KS4 and we offer French, German and Spanish. We follow the Edexcel syllabus and use current resources. We give students the tools necessary to enable them to become effective, independent linguists. They all have free accounts with Activelearn and are issued with a varirty of online support such as Vocabexpress, Linguascope plus published revision guides and resources. There is the possibility to do two languages and we encourage ESOL students to sit GCSE exams in their home language.

We run an annual residential trip to France which is always oversubscribed.
