GRADING PLAN

Link to the S/U Opt-in Form -

ATTENTION STUDENTS AND PARENTS:

Sterling High School has decided to give students and their families two options for grading this semester – either choosing to keep the letter grade that was earned or to take a satisfactory/ unsatisfactory (S/U) grade. Obviously, there are pros and cons to this grading system.

  • This system does not negatively impact GPA.

  • There is less pressure on students to reach a certain grade level.

  • Issues with inequity have less impact.

  • Students may become less focused and settle for average performance.

  • Students who are enrolled in weighted classes will want to carefully consider the impact on their GPA if the class is taken as an “S.”

  • This system may have a negative impact on college admissions and eligibility for athletics, scholarships, awards and other recognitions. *

*It is important to note, that a majority of colleges and universities as well as the NCAA Eligibility Center have stated that they will accept these grades and will use first semester GPA’s for admission decisions. “For NCAA-approved core courses completed in Spring/Summer 2020 that have been issued a grade of [Satisfactory], the Eligibility Center will apply the credit earned in these courses toward the core course requirement in the student's certification. If the student's core-course GPA would increase by assigning a value of 2.300, this value will be assigned to [Satisfactory] courses. However, if the student's core-course GPA would decrease by including the 2.300 value for a [Satisfactory] course, the student’s core-course GPA will be calculated based only on courses with assigned letter grades from other available terms (credit from these courses will still be applied toward the student's core course requirements).”

The letter grade a student earned as of March 12, 2020 will serve as the lowest possible grade a student can receive for this semester as long as the student continues to engage in learning as outlined in the remote learning plan shown below. Key points to understand regarding the new grading guidance are:

  • Students will be able to maintain or improve upon their grade for the rest of this semester.

  • Students will be able to decide on a class-by-class basis which grading option they prefer: The Satisfactory/Unsatisfactory option or the letter grade option. It will be possible for students to make the choice to receive an “S” for a course instead of a letter grade until June 1, 2020.

  • For this semester, any F grades will be transcribed as “unsatisfactory". Students will have the opportunity to retake a course through credit recovery at a later time.

  • Students who choose the S/U option will see no change in their GPA.

To engage in learning and maintain/improve the grade earned by March 12 or earn a satisfactory credit for your courses you must:

  • Complete at least 50% of the weekly assignments and the weekly check-ins for each class.

    • Attending office hours for your teachers if you have questions

    • Attending online learning sessions, if your teacher schedules an online session

  • Revise assignments to meet the minimum requirement based on teacher feedback.

  • Complete the required final project or reflection.

  • Take note of the grade you had for third quarter in IC, as this is the lowest possible grade you will earn AS LONG AS you continue to be engaged and turn in weekly assignments.

  • If you do not engage in Remote Learning from April 7 – May 22 and complete the required final project, your final grade will be transcribed as Unsatisfactory regardless of what grade you had as of March 12 and you will not receive credit.

  • If you are unable to complete weekly assignments, you must email your teachers and develop a plan for turning in the assignments in order to receive credit.

THESE GRADING REQUIREMENTS DO NOT APPLY TO CDLS WORLD LANGUAGE CLASSES OR CONCURRENT ENROLLMENT COURSES. THOSE CLASSES MUST BE COMPLETED AS ASSIGNED/DIRECTED.

Students, if you would like to choose the Satisfactory/Unsatisfactory option for one or more of your classes, as a family, please use this OPT-IN FORM (https://forms.gle/uqYkH63T3U3mpyPS9) to determine which courses you will choose. The confirmation form with parent signature must be submitted to the SHS Counseling Office NO LATER THAN JUNE 1, 2020.

If you have any questions regarding this policy, please contact Kathy Hradecky at hradeckyk@re1valleyschools.org or Traci Reeves at reevest@re1valleyschools.org.

How will my student be graded for fourth quarter?

Student’s current grade in the current system of the district is maintained or improved and does not decrease. This is provided the student demonstrates continued engagement and ability at a passing level after the transition to instructional remote learning days

o Students must check in with each teacher 2 times per week. This check in will include calling and emailing teachers, submitting assignments, responding to an online discussion prompt, joining a synchronous class meeting or checking in with the teacher during office hours via Google Hangouts.

o During the quarter, students must complete at least 50% of the combined participation and assignment submissions to earn credit.

o Assignment grades should be an “A” or “Revise” system --requiring students to meet a minimum level of performance on the assigned work in order to earn a grade. Students may have the opportunity to revise and resubmit an assignment up to 2 times to meet the minimum requirements. You will need to clearly state for students what your policy is for revision (1 or 2 attempts) and what the minimum expectations are on an assignment (rubrics would be very helpful, here).

In lieu of a final exam, students will be asked to do some kind of reflection on or demonstration of learning. There need to be multiple options for students to complete and submit this final (e.g. essay, slide presentation, recorded video, meeting with teacher, etc.)

How will finals be graded?

All finals will be graded as an S/U. 69.5% or higher is an S and 69.4% and below is a U. If your final is weighted as 20%, you should be able to enter 0 maximum points for the final and then hand-key S or U for the "points earned."

Students MUST complete (make a legitimate attempt and turn in) the final AND meet the 50% minimum that was established from the beginning to maintain or improve their grade.

Students who do not turn in a final will receive a final grade of U and no credit for the class.

May 22 will be the final date for all work to be turned in. Traditionally, there are no corrections, retakes, etc. for final exams, so there will be no revisions to final projects/reflections this quarter.

FYI - All failed (U) classes will be made up through credit recovery next year.

ATTENTION STUDENTS AND PARENTS:

AQUELLAS CLASES DEBEN COMPLETARSE ASIGNADAS / DIRIGIDAS.
