The Early Learning and Child Care (ELCC) program at Red Deer Polytechnic consists of a one year certificate or a two year diploma. Within each program year, there are eight core early learning and child courses and two practicum courses. Also within the certificate year is a communication course that students need to complete. These courses are reflective of expectations for early childhood certification within the province of Alberta and updated as needed in consultation with the early learning community. The ELCC program completed a program re-frame in spring of 2020 and the ELCC program is excited for learners to experience these changes. These updates will make more visible the integration of the Alberta Flight early learning framework while also being responsive to opportunities and challenges that have been expressed by educators within the early learning community.
An ELCC Alumni shared: “My advice for all the students is that continue doing the Diploma program, for professional and personal reasons…Professionally, it help me to develop my career, feel confident in a competitive field, aware of what I’m doing well and what I have to improve, also gain respect and credibility from my coworkers and families with whom I work and because I have more tools and knowledge to work better I'm getting my credits in my workplace. Personally, I feel more confident, independent, able to get my goals” (M. V., personal communication, 2017)
"Well-qualified, caring early childhood educators are the prime determinant of a quality child care system, and education is the prime determinant of qualified early childhood educators."
