The college application process begins in the fall of a student's senior year.
Even if you have applied online you must complete the following:
Naviance: Add your colleges to the “Colleges I’m Applying to” link found in the “Colleges” tab.
Letters of Recommendation: If your application requires a letter of recommendation, make sure that you ask your teacher to submit one via Naviance. (Be sure to thank them!)
Completed College/Scholarship Application: Make sure that all sections of the application are complete.
It is recommended that you create an email account just for college applications, financial aid, and scholarships. Do NOT use your 890 account if possible.
BE SURE TO CHECK YOUR COLLEGE EMAIL ACCOUNT REGULARLY SO YOU DON'T MISS IMPORTANT INFORMATION AND DEADLINES!!!
For Common Application Schools:
1. Create an account at www.commonapp.org and add your common applications schools to your account.
2. Link your Naviance account and Common App account in Naviance. Video instructions here.
3. After you ask a teacher to write you a letter of recommendation and they agree, add their name under the “Teacher Recommendation” heading in Naviance. This will allow teachers to upload their letter to your account.
4. Take time writing your essays--they are required at almost all colleges/universities.
5. Once your application(s) are complete & submitted, email your counselor so they know to send your documents (transcript, letters of rec, school profile, school reports, etc) to the colleges you've applied to.
6. Check your email for follow up information from the colleges you've applied to. Many require SUPPLEMENTAL MATERIALS (extra information not required in initial application). This is common for more competitive schools as well as for EOP/HEOP.
7. Complete your FAFSA and TAP applications for financial aid. Research and apply for scholarships.
Please note, counselors are not automatically notified through Common App or Naviance when you add a college to your list--
you must email your counselor to be sure materials are sent on time.
