RCPS Administrators conduct student/teacher observations as often as possible. For information on what administrators look for go to the "Forms/Resources" tab above. Click on the link, Indicators of Student Engagement Explanation. This document outlines the "Look Fors" that administrators will hope to see. Obviously, no administrator expects to view all of the "Look Fors" in one visit. When administrators conduct observations together, they document types of engagement they witnessed and then, consult with one another to compare and contrast the findings of each observation. Inter-rater reliability is an important practice to ensure all observers are on the same page in their ability to identify and rate observations with consistency and is supported by a number of educational consultants including R.J. Marzano. (Marzano, R.J. (2007) Art and Science of Teaching)
The Indicators of Student Engagement Explanation offers Examples and Non-examples of student engagement. This is helpful to both teachers and administrators as it serves as a guide when discussing and looking for examples of deeper learning and higher level student engagement.
Administrators look forward to spending time in the classroom and taking in all of the wonderful learning that our teachers are offering and our students are experiencing.
