Narrative/Freedom and Responsibility
The English Department has organized Quarter 1 to focus on the comprehension of informational text.
Weeks 1 - Intro week, syllabus, and reading assessment
Weeks 2 & 3 - Students will be reading informational articles to determine the central idea and details, draw inferences, Use technical vocabulary, and provide a summary.
Weeks 4 & 5 - Students will be reading articles focusing on a person (profile) to determine the main idea (implied), cite textual evidence to support inferences, use prepositional phrases and determine the meaning of words using context clues.
Weeks 6 & 7 - Students will be reading news articles to analyze the text by answering questions, citing evidence to support the analysis, determining how compound sentences are related, and determining the meaning of words using roots and affixes.
Weeks 8 & 9 - Students will learn how to write an informational text, complete a performance task & finish with the quarter 1 assessment.
The English Language Arts curriculum carefully selected text from different units from the Savvas My Perspective to focus on the collection of Informational texts. Quarter 1 collection contains articles, blogs, and profiles. Students engage with the text and ideas repeatedly throughout the unit to build knowledge and grasp big ideas.
Focus Objective 1: Cite textual evidence that supports analysis of the text.
Focus Objective 2: Cite textual evidence that supports inferences drawn from the text.
Determine a central idea of a text and analyze its development over the course of the text, including how it emerges and is shaped and refined by specific details; provide an objective summary of the text.
Analyze how the author unfolds an analysis or series of ideas or events, including the order in which the points are made, how they are introduced and developed, and the connections that are drawn between them.
Determine the meaning of words and phrases as they are used in a text, including figurative, connotative, and technical meanings; analyze the cumulative impact of specific word choices on meaning and tone.
Write informative/explanatory texts to examine and convey complex ideas, concepts, and information clearly and accurately through the effective selection, organization, and analysis of content.

The ELA curriculum is structured so that all students participate in WHOLE-CLASS instruction and break off into SMALL-GROUP.

The structure of daily lessons depends on
which of these five goals are needed:
Teaching and reinforcing a new topic: Whole Class Instruction followed by Small-Group instruction.
Reinforcing what has been taught: Small-Group Instruction
Reteaching what has been taught: Small-Group Instruction
Periodically reviewing what has been taught: Small-Group Instruction, or Independent Work
