RCOE Alternative Education
Ready-to-Teach and Learn Program
The English Department has a pivotal role to play within RCOE Alternative Education Instructional Program. The department provides the means for students to demonstrate proficiency in English. The goal is to provide every student with the reading and writing skills that will lead to success in other classes, as well as to gain a greater appreciation of works of literature. Through the ready-to-teach curriculum for instructional practices, the English Department aims to give students a rich and diverse range of learning experiences.
Flexible Lesson Design
The English Department has designed and organized ready-to-teach and learn lessons to work in all instructional settings. Whether students are in the classroom or at home, around other students, or working independently, every student has access to the same content and rigor. The flexibility of ready-to-teach and learn lessons that supports teaching and learning in multiple settings is provided by integrating the content materials from the adopted textbook SAVVAS My Perspective
the use of the adopted textbook SAVVAS My Perspective and online applications, such as Plato by Edmentum, DataWORKS lessons, custom designed and the CANVAS Learning Management System.
Flexible Instruction
Each quarter focuses on a theme with a reading and writing component. Each theme encourages students to think beyond what they know and develop community and cultural awareness. Teachers can provide standards-based direct instruction to multiple grade levels within one period by using targeted objectives that help them explain, model, and demonstrate concepts and skills efficiently.
Students will learn English in a collaborative process
Lessons are designed to allow student-to-student conversations at many different levels of difficulty. The instructional strategy "Pair-Share" allows students to engage in a conversation and use many new vocabulary words in an academic setting. Students are grouped in pairs and small groups to allow for more collaboration during the lesson. The RCOE Alternative Education Mathematics program uses collaborative strategies that are adapted from Explicit Direct Instruction (EDI) and Universal Design for Learning (UDL).
Students will communicate their ability to critically think
Lessons are designed to allow students frequent opportunities to answer critical thinking questions. The instructional strategy "Checking for Understanding" is integrated throughout the lesson. Checking for understanding questions relate directly to what has been taught during the lesson and allow students another opportunity to pair-share their answer with a peer. To promote the expectation of students using complete sentences and mathematical vocabulary, sentence frames are provided throughout the lesson. The RCOE Alternative Education Mathematics program uses critical thinking strategies that are adapted from Explicit Direct Instruction (EDI) and Universal Design for Learning (UDL).
Students will be exposed to curriculum design based on the UDL principles
Lessons are designed to provide multiple means of engagement, representation, and action and expression opportunities.
Whole-Class learning is specifically designed to enable the teachers to provide standards-based common direct instruction to multiple grade levels within one instructional period. Targeted objectives drive what teachers will explain, model, or demonstrate...multiple means
