Mental health is important at every stage of life, from childhood and adolescence through adulthood. Mental health includes our emotional, psychological, and social well-being. It affects how we think, feel, and act. It also helps determine how we handle stress, relate to others, and make choices. Prioritizing mental health can also lead to more success in school and in life. Doing this involves reaching a balance between life activities, responsibilities, and efforts to achieve resilience!
RCOE is committed to ensuring the success of all students through extraordinary service, support, and partnerships. Success for all students goes beyond traditional academics and supports the whole student. Research from the National Association of School Psychologists shows that mentally healthy children are more successful in school and in life. Research also indicates that unmet mental health needs are linked to negative outcomes such as academic and behavior problems, school dropout, delinquency, and long-term development of positive relationships and work-related skills. In Alternative Education, mental health services, supports, and resources are readily available for every student and family. In addition to trauma-informed training for teachers and staff, partnerships with local agencies including Riverside Latino Commission, Carolyn E. Wylie Center, local college or universities for Social Work Interns, and Care Solace exist to support the mental health needs of students and families. This philosophy also supports the Superintendent’s Mental Health Initiative to ensure students have access to mental health supports and services.
In 2020, The Riverside County Superintendent of Schools, Dr. Edwin Gomez, announced four initiatives, one of which was a mental health initiative. The Mental Health Initiative is aimed at addressing the needs of the whole student, beyond academics and the classroom. The Mental Health Initiative includes supporting and expanding mental health services and programs within the 23 school districts in Riverside County. To the left of the screen is a video highlighting the importance and significance of this initiative.
The Superintendent’s Mental Health Initiative has expanded access to mental health services by developing six CAREspace. Each CAREspace will support the mental health needs of students, families, and the community of Riverside County. The Riverside County Office of Education has partnered with the Riverside Latino Commission to provide mental health services for each CAREspace. Services are available in both English and in Spanish and include screeners, parent workshops, classroom presentations, case management, group counseling, family counseling, individual counseling, resources, and referrals. All services are provided by qualified professionals including Therapists, Social Workers, and Behavior Specialists. Services are offered in a variety of formats to maximize access for students, families, and the community of Riverside County. Hours of operation will vary depending on each CAREspace location.
