Israeli forces raze homes in

Palestine communities

Home demolition is a popular method used by Israel in the Israeli-occupied territories, which came under their control post the Six-day war which was fought for various aims. The house demolitions can be classified as administrative, punitive, or a result of military operations.

The Six-day war, also known as the June War or the Arab-Israeli War was fought in 1967 between Israel and the neighbouring states which were - Jordan, Syria, and Egypt. An estimated 49,532 Palestinian structures have been demolished by Israel till 2019. Just last week, on the 4th of November, the Israeli army razed an entire village in the occupied West Bank region. A group of diggers and bulldozers demolished the Palestinian village which goes by the name of Khirbet Humsa, leaving 74 people, including 41 minors, homeless. Also demolished were the numerous sheds used as livestock enclosures, portable toilets, water containers, and solar panels. The group also confiscated the tractors and vehicles of the residents.

Palestinian Prime Minister Mohammed Shtayyeh called on the international community to intervene against Israeli troops’ attempt to “displace the citizens of Khirbet Humsa and tens of similar communities from their homes and lands”, pointing to the fact that Israel “chose this evening to commit another crime” as the attention is focused on the United States presidential election.

Almost 800 Palestinians, including 404 minors, have already lost their homes in 2020.

Throughout the entire home demolition strategy, 677 lost their homes, which rose from 387 in 2018 and 521 in 2017.

Untangled Thoughts

Untangled Thoughts is a Mental Health Campaign started by my friend, Sanam Gupta, and I. We are working towards achieving a society where mental health is considered a priority. Our mission is to promote mental health through advocacy, education, and support. We aim to help individuals, especially the younger generation, lead mentally healthy lives.

We are often asked why we started this; it’s quite simple, honestly. At the start of the lockdown, humans, who are also known as social animals, were suddenly confined within four walls of their homes. The coronavirus just got the whole world to a standstill. One of the major impacts on human behaviour was psychological imbalance – the sudden reduction in happening events can significantly influence people’s mental, emotional, and physical well-being. In fact, there was an article in the British Medical Journal (BMJ) that spoke of a spurt in the rate of suicidal thoughts in young adults during the lockdown. Personally, I was extremely bothered by what was happening around me; how could anyone feel that helpless? We underestimate the influence we have on our friends and family. Thus, Untangled Thoughts was born.

In the last few months, we’ve addressed a wide variety of topics ranging from hurtful gossip and anxiety, to toxic relationships and the fear of missing out (FOMO). Mental health is a very sensitive topic and hence, we decided to have our own team of professionals (counsellors, psychologists, and psychotherapists) to guide us through the whole process. We started off with a tiny desire to make a difference; today, after four months, we have a core team of five individuals, including our professionals, and a group of volunteers who help us spread the message. Our purpose of encouraging volunteering is to involve more people to join our fight against the stigma. There are quite a few things planned for the next half year.

More than anything, I’ve seen myself grow as a person. We hope our tiny contribution helps better the lives of people.
