FROM THE PRINCIPAL
During the month that we observe Dr. Martin Luther King Junior's Birthday I thought it might be appropriate to remind you one part of how Raymond School teaches students about kindness and respecting differences. Our school uses the Second Step curriculum for students in Kindergarten through 8th Grade. Second step is most often taught once a week in our classrooms. In grades K-5 Unit 3 is about Empathy and Kindness. According to Ms. Ward, our school counselor, students are taught how it feels to walk in someone else's shoes, as well as how to treat others with kindness and respect. Ms. Ward teaches the 6th-8th grade lessons including Unit 2 which includes lessons on Bullying and Harassment. The students will be finishing these lessons in the next couple of weeks. The topics covered include the kinds of bullying and harassment, the effects on the victims, standing up and staying safe, how to be an upstander, our rights and responsibilities when it comes to bullying and harassment and what we can do to continue to make positive change at Raymond. It is important for families to understand that not all unkind treatment is bullying. Sometimes it is a situation of conflict or simply one human being mean to another. This month's Buddy theme centered on Respecting Differences and Fairness - each team of buddies engaged in age appropriate discussions and activities related to the theme. (check out photos on FB and the gallery below of our most recent buddy activity).Â
