"We are living in the beginning of an environmental crisis and our climate is breaking down. Giving up cannot be an option. We can no longer save the world by playing by the rules. Being young is a great advantage, since we see the world from a new perspective and we are not afraid to make radical changes,"- Greta Thunberg.
Our Abstract
As a group, we identified the many effects that agriculture has on climate change. We focused on solutions like feeding cows red seaweed and reducing runoff. Even though there are many disadvantages agriculture places on our environment we also found that it positively contributes to the U.S. economy, providing 2.1 million full and part-time jobs in the U.S. We also found many unpleasing and appalling facts such as, over 2 quadrillion gallons of water are used in agriculture yearly or at least 231 million pounds of methane per year are emitted due to cows burps and farts! Finally, we researched data, interviewed personas specific to different regions such as Exuma, Bahamas and Australia. After all of the hard work and tedious hours of research we all came to the conclusion that everyone around the world needs to take certain measures to ensure a real change in the future.
Everglades. (n.d.). Wikipedia.
The Everglades has shrunk by more than 50% in the past century due to mostly agricultural development. (2023, February 20). This image demonstrates how humans have altered the water flow throughout the Everglades, damaging environments, habitats, etc. Furthermore, the agricultural industry is creating excess nutrients in Florida waterways causing the production of red tide. Red tide is a harmful algal bloom that initiates toxic chemicals. These chemicals can hurt marine organisms and humans.
Agriculture contributes to about 10% of greenhouse gases in the United States which is 0.643 million metric tons. Agricultural waste lagoons are a vital problem in the United States. (n.d.) In one farm of 2,500 cows, the cows produce as much solid waste as the city of Miami. When the farmers have more manure than they can spread on their fields, they put them in lagoons. These lagoons often leak and pollute the surrounding area with growth hormones, antibiotics, chemical additives to manure and animal blood.
Hog farm that spilled 1 million gallons of feces, urine into waterways had been warned of lagoon problems. (n.d.). Ncnnewsline.
NATURE AND ENVIRONMENTGERMANY. (n.d.). dw.com.
Agriculture is the main source of pollution in most countries. Worldwide, agriculture emits 12 billion metric tons of greenhouse gases annually. Pesticides also kill 200,000 people yearly which is the same amount of people that died in the Bangladesh Liberation War. (n.d.). Globally, farmers are exposed to pesticides, have heat stress, and don't have clean drinking water. Finally, agricultural land takes up 44% of the world's land.
