Day 5

Saturday 8th August 2021
Day 5 of the dig and we were joined by 9 children and just as many adults. Everyone seemed to thoroughly enjoy their time searching for whatever could be found in three newly dug pits. Plenty of worms and stones in the first context (first layer down), some coloured glass and a Gryphaea or Devil's Toe Nail which is a kind of extinct oyster and recognisable by it's ridged, curved, hook-like appearance (see image).
The sand pit dig was just as interesting for the younger archaeologists as they dug and identified objects in the sand.
Also found by Alan the metal detectorist were a couple of coins. More about those when they have been cleaned and identified.
What our visitors said today....
This has been such a lovely experience for the entire family today ( 3-36 years). We have ALL learned something new. We have taken some excellent inspiration for our own home education. Thank you so much for putting it all together and we can't wait to attend future events.
Really interesting, volunteers explained things well and engaged the children.
