Spring 2025 Passion Projects!

Let's Wonder!!
Together we wondered:
How Do We Wonder?
Do Hummingbirds Really Hum?
What Are Multiples?
Then, independently, students explored the website Wonderopolis, completed a graphic organizer, and presented it to the class. The topics the students chose were fantastic and quite varied.
March Mammal Madness
Who would win if a grizzly and a pack of wolves faced off? That is the question! Students went through information on 65 combatants to set up their brackets to see who the grand champ would be. We will follow the encounters throughout March and see which animal ranks supreme. We learned about many new animals today!
Living Life with Intensity
Gifted kids tend to experience life more intensely than other kids. This means that often they feel things bigger, think things deeper, and create things more imaginatively than others, which can be good and not so good.

Sloth Math
How long can sloths hold their breath to swim? Students deduced each sloth's time by following the clues given. Next, they wrote clues for their partners.
What is Science Fiction?
We learned about science fiction and what science fiction writers do. We listened to a dramatic reading of an illustrated story based on a famous work of science fiction called The War of the Worlds. Next, students completed a choice board of options to create their own piece of science fiction.
Let's Talk Foundations
We discussed why it is important to have strong foundational thinking skills. Our example was a video of the building of a parking garage deck and how the foundation had to be mega-strong to hold all that weight. Just like with thinking, when the weight of new ideas and unfamiliar problems seem too much to carry, we must have a variety of thinking skills to persevere in new challenges.
Math Olympiad
Students participated in their third Math Olympiad contest. Students have 30 minutes to complete 5 word problems. Following the contest, we held a class discussion regarding the problems, the solutions, and the strategies used, and we had a mini-lesson on prime numbers.
Wonder League Robotics Competition
Mission 2. Students must set up the correct map as given, build a tool to help Dash move debris, and code their way through the obstacles following specific prompts from Wonder League.
You Are Not an Alien, but You Are Different
Focus of this mini-lesson: Being gifted means that you are different from most people in this world. Being different isn't good or bad; it doesn't mean you are better or worse than anyone else. It simply means that you experience life differently.
Fall Semester 2023
Wow! Where did the first semester go?
We have been busy, busy on these Ignite days. One strength of the Ignite class is the flexibility to evolve to meet the needs of the current students. For this first semester, we have spent much time getting to know each other, forming relationships, challenging our teamwork skills, and exploring science concepts through a space theme.
Wonder League Robotics
All Ignite students participate in the Wonder League Robotic Competition using the Blockly software and the Dash robots. Independently, they are completing a coding curriculum to teach them all the fundamentals of coding and progress through the ability to switch from block coding to text coding. They will complete the curriculum assigned to them
Space Club Space Club
Space Club is intermingled with all the other activities. Throughout the semester, students completed 5 missions related to the moon!
Mission 1: Mission Patch
Mission 2: Roller Coaster
Mission 3: Astronaut
Mission 4: Plant
Mission 5: Robot
MATH-(Hundreds Boards, Number Tiles, Math Olympiads)
We do various math tasks to practice grade-level skills, dig deeper, and extend learning. We have been working on persevering and sticking with it when we become uncomfortable with the academic challenge. Now, we have a variety of puzzles to promote critical thinking while expanding and practicing math skills.
Scholastic Magazines Scholastic Magazines
SuperSTEM provides STEM knowledge and skills and encourages students to problem-solve and investigate phenomena with real-world interdisciplinary tests while offering a variety of hands-on tasks. Ask your students about our bubble gum stretch lab.
Scholastic Scope providesScholastic Scope provides access to multigenre articles, readers' theater scripts, and vocabulary opportunities at a higher level to expand literacy skills while engaging their interests. Numerous writing competitions will be available as well.
