Reading

The Benchmark Reading Comprehension tests are difficult during the first and second trimesters as they test the End-of-the-Year Mastery (see chart). There are no questions about the passages we read in class. Students are to apply the reading comprehension skills they learned to a new passage.

Across grade levels at Brookhaven, students keep the score they get the first time. For this reason and as a district suggestion, tests will be graded on a curve determined by the scores of all the fifth grade students.

In the third trimester a curve will not be used since the students have had repeated exposure to the standards and the expectations of reading comprehension skills.
