Thanksgiving: Fact or Fiction- Read Works.org
Thanksgiving has developed many traditions, cultures, ideas, and activities over the years. As Thanksgiving itself has many important idols to thank for its' development. Benjamin Franklin in 1784, suggested in a letter to his daughter that the wild turkey would be a more appropriate national symbol for the newly independent United states rather than the Bald Eagle. He believed that the turkey was a much more respected bird rather than the Bald Eagle. As he described the turkey as "a bird of courage".
Have you ever heard the rumor that turkey makes you sleepy? Well its true! Turkey actually contains the essential amino acid tryptophan, which is an actual nature sedative. However, did you know that many other foods such as chicken, beef, pork, beans, and cheese also contain amino acid tryptophan? Many people believe that turkey tryptophan makes people sleepy after a big thanksgiving feast, but it actually isn't. When people consume large amounts of food and drinks it is likely that it makes you sleepy. Also consuming large amounts of fats and carbohydrates when many eat turkey can also be a factor to you sleepy.
Many of these factors of Thanksgiving is what makes the holiday so special. So, every year on the fourth thursday of November we celebrate a special day. Thanksgiving!
