Student Study Team (SST)
The SST was developed to provide a positive, problem solving process to identify strategies and programs that may help students who are having difficulty in the regular classroom. The process will assist teachers and students by developing classroom instructional suggestions, classroom accommodations, or intervention plans. The SST process is a regular education responsibility that must be considered prior to a referral for special education services.
The SST members include: the student, the parents/guardians, the dean of students, and classroom teachers. The team could also include members such as the school psychologist, program specialist, law enforcement agencies or representatives of public or private community organizations.
The team discusses the student’s progress or general concerns as well as their strengths and weaknesses. An action plan is devised to help a student succeed in the classroom.
504
A 504 plan is designed to plan a program of instructional services to assist students with special needs who are in a regular education setting. A student is referred by a teacher, support staff, parent/guardian, physician or therapist. A 504 plan meeting is then held to determine if a child qualifies, and if so a plan for the student is developed. The plan includes a list of recommended accommodations and services that the child would be provided in a regular educational setting. The dean of students, psychologist, student, parent/guardian, teachers, principal, and/or support staff may be involved in the process. The 504 plan is reviewed annually or on an as needed basis.
