In our classroom, we use AR to monitor our reading growth and progress. Each student will take the STAR test at the beginning of the year and then at the end of each quarter. The STAR test measures their individual comprehension and then gives them a ZPD (Zone of Proximal Development). The ZPD is a range of books that is perfect for each individual (not too easy and not too hard) and by sticking within your ZPD, students will improve as a reader.
Each quarter, individual students will have a goal to reach. We track our goals on a board in the classroom and celebrate each time someone moves up. At the end of the quarter, all students who reached 100% of their goal will be invited to Lunch Bunch (a special lunch in the classroom with the teacher).
The books in our classroom library and school library are leveled and include the AR level, points, and quiz number. To search for AR books outside of school, you can download the "Points Scan Free" app on Apple or Android or you can go to www.arbookfind.com.
In our class, we do a reading challenge in our class to help us find exciting books to read that we might not read otherwise.
Each student will get a reading necklace. When you complete each challenge, you get to add a bead to your necklace. In order to get your bead, you need to complete AR quizzes on the three books for that category and you need to pass the AR quiz with a 70% or higher. Previously taken quizzes don’t count. These need to be new quizzes that are taken in the current school year. Earn as many beads as you want!!! We will keep the necklaces displayed in the classroom so everyone can celebrate your success.
Red bead - Read 3 picture books by the same author
Pink bead - Read 3 chapter books by the same author
Green bead - Read 3 books in a series
Blue bead - Read 3 nonfiction books
Silver bead - Read 3 award winning books
Gold bead - Reaching an AR award level
At the end of the year, students who have earned a certain number of points throughout the year will earn an award. The awards are as follows:
50 points = medal
75 points = gold medal
100 points = small trophy
125+ points = large trophy with name engraved
As we get closer to the end of the year, please pay attention to the cut off date. There needs to be enough time to order the trophies and medals. The cut off date is usually around mid-April.
As students read and take quizzes, Renaissance keeps track of how many words have been read. Everytime a student reaches an increment of 500,000 words, they will get a certificate and their name on the announcements.
