Realistically, to give everyone the opportunity to compete in events at a meet, the goal is to have approximately 60 athletes. There will be approximately 25 swimmers for boys and girls, split up between JV and Varsity somewhat evenly. The team may have up to 10 divers total. Space during practice and events during meets are limited.

Swimmers and divers are required to take the bus provided by the school to duel meets on weekdays. Parents are allowed to pick up their swimmer/diver at the end of the meet and take them home. There will be bus returning to PVI as well after meets. There will be occasions on weekends for invites where students need to find their own transportation to meets. This will be communicated by the coaching staff.
As a varsity-level sport at PVI, there is no guarantee of a swimmer earning a spot on the roster unless they meet the requirements listed on the "Tryouts and Expectations" page. If numbers of athletes at tryouts exceed 60, it should be assumed that not all athletes will be a part of the final roster.
This is a Varsity sport; not a club sport or activity. The ability to represent your school in competition is a privilege, and every student-athlete should treat it as such. Every athlete will be expected to compete in every event available. Ultimately, this is a team sport, and we will need every athlete to commit to the idea that we are here to support each other as we pursue excellence in the water and in the classroom.
We represent ourselves, our families, and PVI at all times. We hold each of you in high regard as members of this team. We trust in you a responsibility TO ACT APPROPRIATELY IN AND OUT OF THE WATER. Student-athletes will be held to the PVI Parent & Student Handbook at all athletic events held on or off campus. Appropriate disciplinary actions will be taken if infractions occur.
Remember: Any time you wear PVI gear, including swim and dive gear, outside of this campus, you are representing something bigger than yourself.
Earning a Varsity Letter is an honor. The coaching staff will award Varsity Letters based on meet participation, achievement, attendance at practice, attitude, and effort. Not every athlete will letter.
The coaching staff will select the athletes for competition based on their attendance, effort, and previous performances. There may be instances this season where there are more limitations than normally occur due to capacity limits at certain meets.
As per high school rules, athletes can swim up to a maximum of events in the following ways:
2 individual events and 2 relay swims
1 individual event and 3 relay swims
Athletes are not permitted to swim more than this amount, but may end up swimming less depending on the roster for the meet and availability of events.
Student-athletes will lose their eligibility if they are failing two (2) courses, or have one (1) incomplete during the current grading period. Additionally, a GPA below 2.0 will prevent student-athletes from participation. Academics do come first. If a student-athlete has legitimate academic issue that needs to be resolved, it is their responsibility to reach out to the Head Coach to inform them and the coaching staff of a potential academic-related issue.
As outlined in the PVI Student and Parent Handbook, "When a student has 4 or more absences in any class in a quarter or 8 or more absences in any class during a semester, the student is NOT eligible for any student activity early dismissal" (p. 52).
If a student wants to participate in swim meets that require early dismissals, including the St. Anthony's trip this year, this policy must be followed.
As outlined in the PVI Student and Parent Handbook, "Students must be in attendance by 9:20 am (in class and by the start of Liturgy on Mass days) to participate in any extra-curricular or co-curricular activity. Any student who leaves school early is ineligible for participation that day. Any exceptions to this policy must be approved by the Dean of Students. Violation of this policy will result in suspension for the next game, activity or performance" (p. 52). There are no exceptions for this policy if families do not get approval from the Dean of Students ahead of time.
"Students may not participate in extra-curricular or co-curricular activities if they are scheduled to serve detention during the time of the extra-curricular or co-curricular event" (PVI Handbook, p. 52). This will count as an unexcused absence from practice and may be taken into account when a meet lineup is being created.
Aside from paying for required team gear and providing transportation to practices and some of the meets on weekends, there are no additional "pay to swim" costs for this team. The only exception to this is overnight trips for meets that will require an extra cost, although traveling to the meet is optional.
