OUR HISTORY/MISSION
Putnam Valley proudly maintains a long-standing tradition of excellence in music education, offering all students meaningful, high-quality experiences tailored to their individual interests and abilities. From the earliest grades, students are immersed in a rich general music curriculum, with elementary learners exploring modern band instruments such as ukulele, keyboard, and drum kit, culminating in performances of contemporary music in formal concert settings. 3rd and 4th grade students have the opportunity to take the stage in an annual spring musical, and all 4th graders are encouraged to begin instrumental study and join the band.
This strong foundation continues in middle school, where students expand their musical growth through a diverse range of ensembles. Opportunities in musical theater (both on stage and behind the scenes), jazz ensembles, and participation in NYSSMA solo and ensemble festivals allow students to challenge themselves and showcase their talents. Students also have the opportunity to audition for and perform in All-County band and chorus concerts each year.
At the high school level, students refine their artistry through an extensive selection of ensembles and our award-winning theater program. Popular offerings include jazz ensemble, guitar club, pit orchestra, piano class, and courses in music production and recording. Many graduates go on to study music at the collegiate level, while others carry their passion forward as lifelong musicians. Supported by a dedicated district and community, Putnam Valley has received the BEST COMMUNITIES FOR MUSIC EDUCATION AWARD from the NAMM foundation for over a decade. We take great pride in our program and invite our entire school and local community to celebrate and support the arts in Putnam Valley.
