Read through these frequently asked questions to learn more about academic probation and the benefits of the appeal process.

What does it mean if I am on academic probation? 

Students on academic probation have a reduced grade point average or reduced pace of completion. Students will need to increase their CGPA or rate of completion in order to graduate.

What is SAP?  

SAP is Satisfactory Academic Progress; the minimum CGPA and pace students must maintain to graduate.

What is CGPA?  

Cumulative Grade Point Average

What is the minimum CGPA? 

What is pace and what is the minimum pace to graduate? 

Pace is the amount of time it takes to graduate. Each time students fail or withdraw from a class, the pace is negatively impacted. 

How can I tell if I am on academic probation for my CGPA or for pace? 

Your student advisor can assist you with specific information about your personal situation in regards to academic probation.

What happens if I am on academic probation? 

First, don’t panic. Students on academic probation should submit an academic probation appeal to earn extended time to improve their CGPA and/or pace.

How do I submit an academic probation appeal? 

Students should complete and submit the appeal form online.  You can find the form here. Please contact your Student Advisor if you need assistance.

Do I have to submit an academic probation appeal? Why? 

It is recommended all students on academic probation submit an appeal. By earning an approved appeal, students may get an extra three terms to raise their grades and/or pace.

What is my deadline to submit an academic probation appeal? 

Appeal forms must be submitted no later than the second to last week of the term

When will I be notified of the academic probation appeal decision? 

Appeals are reviewed during the last few weeks of the term and students will be notified before the end of the term.

Can I take a leave of absence while I am on academic probation? 

No. A leave of absence in the middle of the term will result in a W grade, which will cause academic dismissal. Students can; however, take a leave of absence after the term ends.

Do I have to pass my classes if I have an approved academic probation appeal? 

Yes. Students must pass all classes while on academic probation, including final probation. 

What happens if my appeal is approved? 

An approved appeal grants students an extra three terms to improve grades and/or pace. When an appeal is granted, the student’s status will change from probation to final probation. Students may be on final probation status for a maximum of three terms.







What happens if my appeal is denied? 

Sometimes an appeal is denied. Do not give up! Now is the time to work on submitting late work. Students may still get off probation if they meet the minimum requirements to meet CGPA and/or pace.



What happens if I need to withdraw while on probation?

 Students who withdraw from the University at the end of term while still on probation, will not be able to return in good standing. This means students will have to go through the appeal process with a thorough review to determine if they are eligible to return. Students who withdraw from a course while on probation will be academically dismissed for not passing all their classes.

How much time should I devote to classes to be successful? 

Undergraduate students should expect to spend approximately 3 hours per credit per week per class. Therefore, students taking a 5 credit course should estimate 10-15 hours a week. Students taking a 6 credit course should estimate 18 hours a week per class. Students who are taking two classes should double the time.
