After reading What School Could Be and Most Likely to Succeed, I decided that an interview with Ted Dintersmith would be the perfect way to start my podcast. He observed over 200 schools all across the U.S to find classes that incorporate leadership and exploration into their curriculum. He earned a PHD in engineering from Stanford, and was appointed by President Barack Obama in 2012 to represent the U.S at the United Nations General Assembly where he spoke about Education and Entrepreneurship. While I was researching for an upcoming video, I came across an article about the state of the Japanese education system. Using Japan as an example was important to me because it allowed me to connect my personal and cultural experiences to my new home in Hawaii. I decided to reach out and interview Emi Takemura Miller, who is a current leader in education, raising awareness about alternatives to conventional teaching methods in Japan. She eventually brought the documentary “Most Likely to Succeed” to Japan, and showed it at schools all across the country. Mrs. Takemura Miller was on the Osaka City Innovation Committee as well as a member of the Japanese Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications. She has been working to encourage more girls to participate in STEM, becoming an inspiring, strong women figure in Japan. Watch from 3:50-4:44 to get a glimpse of what this episode is about.
