After working with Lauren Usami in Girls Talk Back, she sent my proposal to the Director of the Hawai'i Association for Behavioral Analysis (HABA) so I can connect with educators on the island. The Director then invited me to become a guest speaker at the annual HABA conference where ABA therapists and specialists from around the country gathered together for training exercises and lectures from leading doctors on how to approach children with autism.
My proposal was to construct a mandatory curriculum on autism training that all students going through the College of Education would be required to take. Many communities in Hawaii, especially Native Hawaiian communities, lack resources and specialists to detect and treat autism at a young age. However, early childhood intervention has proven to be a vital part of an autistic child's growth. If every educator has basic training on how to identify autistic traits, as well as teach, communicate, discipline, and work with students with autism, there would be more adults who are equipped to nurture them at school. If every educator has basic autism training, then even preschool or kindergarten teachers can detect when a child may need more help, and direct their families to the services they need.
I believe that an educator's role is to teach students, and that means all students. Children with autism should not be excluded from this category. I want to construct a team of UH Professors and ABA therapists to work on 4-5 lesson plans to implement into a mandatory introductory course in the College of Education. This curriculum can hopefully be implemented at UH and other colleges on the island.
I realized that the best way to actualize my project was to connect with members of the Department of Education and the board of UH Manoa. After presenting my curriculum proposal to over 200 educators and administrators, I met and discussed with those who wanted to help my cause.
I wish my little sister had more teachers at her public school who knew how to communicate with her and create environments that were comfortable for her. This project will seek to eliminate some of these barriers.
