WHY THE CHANGE?
In an effort to be more systematic in how we approached teacher feedback, the Walkthroughs were revised to be focused on a specific Element of Effective Classroom Systems each month. In year's past, the walkthrough instrument was extensive, scoring and providing feedback on every element, making it difficult to provide quality feedback. Also, it was unlikely for an observer to see all the elements in one classroom visit, making the feedback inaccurate at times.
Feed Forward
After reading "The Feedback Fix" by Joe Hirsch, it was imperative that the system for Walkthroughs be revised. To make the walkthroughs "feed forward" instead of "feed back," teachers received the document you see (to the right) at the beginning of each month. An explanation of what the element might look like in a classroom and strategies for addressing each element were shared ahead of time. This allowed teachers time to reflect on their instructional choices and make changes prior to the walkthroughs occurring.
celebrating teacher success
At the end of each month, the observers compiled exemplars of each element to share out with the staff. These teacher shoutouts not only improve morale, but also encourage a culture of collaboration by sharing model teachers that others can visit. The teacher shoutouts were also shared on the school's Facebook page. This allows the community to stay informed about the great things happening in our classrooms.
For the 2022/23 school year, the PCHS Leadership Team would like to place an intentional focus on different areas of our Effective Classroom Systems. Instead of taking a wide approach and providing feedback on every system, we will be zooming in to focus on one or two systems each month. This will allow teachers to receive more specific feedback and focus in on one area of their instruction.
setting up the system
During the walkthrough, observers submit their feedback to a Google Form which is emailed to the observer and the teacher(s). Within the Google Form, observers look for areas of strength and growth for the specific element of classroom systems. Then, observers choose from a list of previously selected articles, videos, and resources which can be shared with the teacher(s). These resources are intended to support the teacher(s) in improving their practice or encouraging them to try new strategies.
Observers are set on a monthly rotation by department. For example, the principal might see the English department in August to coach them on Classroom Environment. Then, in September he would move to the Math department to coach them on Learning Targets. In January, the elements will be cycled back through a second time. Allowing each observer one month to complete their walkthroughs gives them time to go back and visit a teacher more than once, if necessary. A follow-up visit/conversation can lead to better implementation of the improvement plan.
