Day 1 and 2: The Main Idea powerpoint will take two days, there are practice passages at the end of the powerpoint and gives directions. They will be constructing a one sentence summary of what they read for each passage. They struggle with this and its good practice.

Day 3: Have students read this short article about the aftermath of the Hurricane in North Carolina. Have them write one sentence that summarizes the main idea of this article and have them come up with a new title for the article.

Week of October 22nd-26th- Main Idea and CLOSE Reading

CLOSE Reading 3 Read Chart and Annotation Symbols

Hurricanes and Climate Change.pdf

CLOSE Reading is both an AVID strategy and Common Core Aligned. It is a more user friendly way to read deeper. This Lesson will take 3-5 opportunity sessions depending on your class and pacing. It is okay to take longer as parts are more complex and you may want to go slower.

To CLOSE Read students need to read the text 3 times, each time it is for a different purpose. For the first read go over the CLOSE Reading Annotation and Symbols chart. Have them do each type of annotation on the article Fueled by a warming planet.

For the second read of Fueled by a warming planet follow the second read chart and have them answer the following questions 1. What text structures and text features were used? 2.What was the author's purpose? 3. How does the author feel about the subject? Why did the author use particular words and phrases?

For the third read of Fueled by a warming planet follow the third read chart and have them answer the following questions (this is the hardest part). 1. What inferences can you make? 2. How does the author support the key points and give specific examples from the text? 3. How does this relate to other texts you have read? 4. How does this relate to your life?
