MONOMYTH STAGES:
INITIATION
Using our Workbook (and these Websites: Movies, Books, Stages Explained work with 1 partner to rewatch & analyze a chosen movie looking for the 4 steps in Act 1 of the Monomyth ("The Ordinary World"). It is best to use a movie listed in our booklet or one of the movies or books suggested in the websites above. Record your findings in a very simple Google Slideshow to be presented to the class next week.
DEPARTURE
With your Act One partner select another movie/book/game to explore Act 2: The Road of Trials. You choose the story and create an analytical Google Slides presentation (same as Act 1). We are further into the Hero's Journey now. The Steps aren't as easily recognized or understood as in Act 1. Let's use this resource as well as this one to help you briefly explain your assigned step to the class.
What challenges does Act 2 bring for our hero? How will these trials change our Hero? What ultimate challenge is the Hero being prepared for?
RETURN
Using our Unit 1 Shared Doc, with group mates, let's act out Act 3. You have 20mins to prepare an explanatory & entertaining short drama skit, involving all 4-5 group members, that makes your 3 assigned Act 3 steps come to life. No Slideshow or tech needed. You have 1 narrator, 1 Joseph Campbell expert, 1 Hero, and 1-2 other actors portraying other parts of Act 3. Break a leg!
After discussing the Campbellian cave complete Journal Entry #4 to consolidate understanding & consider your own cave in your own life.
Campbell discusses a common feature of the monomyth-- a literal or metaphorical cave that the hero must enter. Like the hero's journey as a whole, the hero may initially be reluctant but through acceptance he may gain a great treasure-- understanding or growth. A cave is a place with little light, evoking thoughts of ancient times or mystery. Do you consider a cave to be a safe place or a scary place?
