Now that you have looked at some resume templates and identified skills that are popular in manufacturing internship positions, you may start want to be filling in any gaps or adding certifications to strengthen your skillset. The resource in this section will focus on where to find a reliable way to gain these industry recognized skills that are valued by companies across the world. The resource I have personally found to be amazing and is what helped me land an internship position is the Insititute of Industrial and Systems Engineers.
The Institute of Industrial and Systems Engineers is an organization that focuses on the needs of individuals majoring in the field of Industrial or Systems Engineering. It offers a range of resources that help students build relevant skills, earn certifications and prepare for internships and full-time roles. Through its career center, users can search for active jobs and internship positions that pertain to whole assortment of listings, including manufacturing, logistics, analytics, and many more. In addition to job listings, IISE provides access to webinars, industry publications, resume templates, and professional development tools tailored to the needs of industrial engineers. Overall, this organization is an all-in-one platform for students connecting their academic preparation with industry expectations.
When you click the link, the first thing that would be good to do would be to make an account with your student email address to receive updates on relevant news on new job listings, certifications, courses or conferences that can help you build the skills you need and find active jobs pertaining to manufacturing.
TIP 1:
Hover over Training tab and select "IISE Training Center".
From there hover over “Explore our Training” and select “All online training”. There will be a list of courses (with links) that can be taken online which will have the description, what you will learn, where it can be used and how much it will cost. I recommend doing the Six Sigma Green Belt training as this is an industry standard in Manufacturing. In addition, online courses are cheaper and more flexible than in-person courses.
Although this section is intended for how to get certifications that would help in obtaining a Manfacturing internship, I wanted to include some other tips not related to certifications but are still helpful in some aspects of this guide, such as "Finding a Job" and "Interview Prep".
TIP 1:
To find more information on Job/internship listing head to Career tab and select "Career Center Home". From there you can enter into the search bar what field the job you want, location and company (image below).
TIP 2:
To connect with members near you, it would be helpful to check the "Communities" tab and select "Chapters & Regions".
From there you can click "locate a chapter". This will direct you to a search dashboard where you can search by the "Chapter name", "Chapter Location", and "Chapter Region". I recommend searching by Chapter location since it allows you find chapters in either your state or country (P.S. There is a chapter in State College!).
Once you hit search, there will be a list of chapters that appear and how you can contact them. Once you contact them and find out where they meet and how often, you can use that to connect with fellow peers and professionals that are in fields of manufacturing. With this you can even ask about interview tips, among other things.
