The PSHS Specialization Years Program (SYP) is designed to be outcomes-based, learner-centered, humanistic, and focused on higher-order thinking skills.
Outcomes-Based > decisions on curriculum are driven by a pre-determined set of student exit learning outcomes
Learner-Centered > emphasis is given on students doing the learning, with teachers as facilitators
Humanistic Design > approaches to teaching and learning are based on reason and scientific methods
Focus on Higher Order Learning > learning outcomes target the more complex thinking skills
The Specialization Years Program includes Science Core and Elective subjects that scholars can choose from in preparation for future university courses and careers.
A student must take one Science Core in Grade 11 and continue the same core in Grade 12. The Science Core options are Biology, Chemistry, or Physics.
A student must take one Science/Technology/Engineering (STE) Elective per grade level. The options for elective are Agriculture, Computer Science, Engineering, Technology, or another Science Core subject.
A student is required to take all other core subjects: Mathematics, Research, English, Filipino, and Social Science.
A student has an option to take either Level 1 or Level 2 offering of Biology, Chemistry, Physics, and Mathematics, with the requirement that a student must take at least one Level 2 subject during the specialization years.
A student cannot take a Level 2 subject in Grade 12 if he/she did not take the Level 2 offering of the prerequisite of that subject in Grade 11. Excellence awardees in Biology, Chemistry, Physics and Mathematics must have taken Level 2 subjects in the particular field in both Grades 11 and 12.
