Exploring Literary Classics!
What can we learn from reading literary classics? In this module, students will consider the answer to this question through a case study of Peter Pan by J.M. Barrie. At the beginning of the module, students will read an informational text about the author and historical context. As students read chapters of Peter Pan, they'll consider how each new chapter builds on the events in previous chapters, and make connections between what they have read in Peter Pan and the issues presented in the informational text. They will analyze character traits and actions, and compare their point of view to the point of view of the characters. Once students have finished reading Peter Pan, they'll write a book review explaining whether or not they would recommend the story to a friend! Students finish the module by writing their own narrative about a Neverland Adventure!
Students can access online book collections using thier PSD credentials on Epic until 3pm daily!
Talk to your student about the texts they are reading in the classroom, particularly if any of the topics raised might be sensitive for your child.
Read narrative texts and talk to your student about how the author has shown rather than told character feelings through dialogue and description of their thoughts and actions, and also about the words and phrases the author has used for effect.
Read literary classics and stories, including those from home countries. Talk to your student about how things have changed since they were written and what this tells us about how things were then.
*Your student is expected to independently read topic-related books or books of their choice for approximately 20 minutes each day.
