1-800-662-HELP (4357), (also known as the Treatment Referral Routing Service) or TTY: 1-800-487-4889 is a confidential, free, 24-hour-a-day, 365-day-a-year, information service, in English and Spanish, for individuals and family members facing mental and/or substance use disorders.
Talk to them when they are sober.
Explain your feelings. It is important to express real, sincere concern for the person. Letting them know you care about them without being judgmental. “I’m worried,” “I noticed,”
Be specific. Use specific examples of when the addiction/use has worried you, caused harm, or had a negative impact.
Get a trusted adult or friend to help you talk to them. Make sure it comes from a loving and safe place.
You did not cause the addiction, you can’t control it, or cure it!
You may feel anger, sadness, offended, heartbroken. All these emotions are natural. Once these initial feelings wear off the goal is to support and start working towards a solution.
Take care of your own needs: sleep, eat, exercise, sunshine, fun, support and friendship/family.
*Remember that addiction is a disease and usually has deep underlying issues tied to the addiction (depression, hurt, trauma, family issues, etc.)
1.Educate yourselves!
2.Surround yourself with positive people
3.Set Healthy Boundaries/ Refusal skills
4.Set goals
5.Practice Self Care
6.Get support
