The first year of high school has proven to be the pivotal year in terms of adjustment and achievement. Early efforts and interventions made by schools in addressing student attendance, discipline, academics, and social adaptation are crucial in determining a student’s success in high school (Alspaugh, 2000). To proactively address their unique needs, all 9th graders are required to enroll in Lambkin Way.
Lambkin Way is a two-credit year long course designed to promote a successful transition from middle school to Fort Collins High School. The class meets once a week and is taught by FCHS teachers in partnership with upperclassmen who have been selected to serve as LINK leaders. The LINK leaders are matched with their Lambkin Way group during Freshman orientation prior to the start of the school year and provide an essential link between the ninth graders and the upperclassmen throughout the semester and beyond.
The typical week in Lambkin Way will include the following activities: three thematically-based lessons, at least Guided Study – 20 min per week, individual teacher-student conferences to discuss academic progress with possible referral for academic interventions, and announcements about upcoming FCHS activities and events.
Lambkin Way’s comprehensive curriculum reflects district (successful transitions and post-secondary readiness) and building initiatives (improving reading scores and increasing the percentage of classes passed by Freshmen) by providing instruction to support three main areas of a ninth grade student’s life: personal and school success, social and emotional well-being and planning for the future. Lambkin Way provides ninth grade students with a venue to learn about pertinent school information such as FCHS expectations, goals traditions and activities, to improve their organizational, communication and study skills, to receive academic enrichment and assistance, and to grow socially and emotionally . Of equal importance, Lambkin Way promotes positive connections with at least one adult in the school (their Lambkin Way instructor) as well as with peer mentors (the LINK leaders) and other members of their Lambkin Way class.
