Calculus is a challenging class! Having a strong foundation in Precalculus (College Algebra/College Trig) from the beginning will allow you to focus on learning calculus instead of catching up on prerequisite skills.
We will take a prerequisite review exam the first week of class. We’ll have a few days to review in class. You will receive a packet during the first week, but if you want to get a head start, here are all the things it will cover.
Function notation
Understand what the words "simplify," "solve," and "evaluate" mean
Simplifying difference quotients
Piecewise functions
Writing linear equations
Graphs of common parent functions: Linear, polynomial, logarithmic, exponential, rational, trigonometric (sine/cosine/tangent)
Graph transformations
Factoring!!! and solving polynomial equations
Properties of rational functions: Domain, horizontal and vertical asymptotes, holes, intercepts
Adding, subtracting, multiplying, and dividing rational functions/fractions
Compositions of functions
Inverse functions
Properties of exponents
Simplifying radicals and rational exponents
Properties of logarithms
Exponential growth/decay functions
Solving exponential and log equations
Trigonometric functions
Unit circle
Pythagorean, quotient and reciprocal identities
Inverse trig functions (remember domain and range??????)
Solving trigonometric equations
From geometry: Basic area/volume formulas (rectangles, triangles, circles, prisms, cones, pyramids, spheres, cylinders)
