Here are some activities you can do on Fridays if you'd like extra music. If you choose to do any of this extra learning please share it with me by creating a video on flipgrid. (see link in the heading)
Music is everywhere and I'm sure you have a favorite style of music. In the tab above labeled Listening suggestions you will find the classical works that are suggested by the state music standards to be introduced organized by grade level. Please google a few and listen and discuss music as a family. Here are some questions to get the conversation flowing:
Did you like the music we just listened to?
What did you like or not like about it? (the rhythm, volume, tempo, instruments)
Can you name any of the instruments you heard?
If this music went with a movie, what do you think the movie would be about?
Does this music inspire you to draw/paint or move/dance? What would your drawing look like? or how would you move to this music?
If a particular piece really moves you and you want to send me a video talking to me about the music, telling me your movie idea, or showing me your drawing or dance, please send it to flip grid (see link in heading)
Find a book you have that uses rhyming phrases and create an original melody. Sing me your book on flip grid. If you think you'd prefer to rap, go to Q-Grooves to make your background track and then rap your book to me.
If you are nervous, you can hold the book up in a way that we can't see your face.

I have already seen several musicians share parody songs about this pandemic on FB. I want you to try to write a parody song about washing your hands to a simple elementary school melody. Bonus points if it rhymes. Here are the first few that came to my mind, but there are so many more options....
Row, row, row your boat
Mary had a little lamb
Twinkle, Twinkle little star
Itsy Bitsy Spider
Take me out to the Ballgame

With permission from your adult, pull out the pots and pans, whisks and spoons, spices and containers of noodles/oatmeal/rice and anything else you can find and just jam out. This will sound the best if you can get your whole household to play along. The materials are what make the sounds, so try a wooden spoon on a metal bowl, a metal spoon on a metal bowl, etc. until you have the sound you like. Once you've selected your found sounds, listen to each other play and try to get a groove going on.

Use the food in your pantry to make a rhythm chain using syllables. Here's an example:
Macaroni, oatmeal, pretzels, corn. apple sauce, popcorn, granola bars, pears.
tika tika, ti-ti, ti-ti, ta tika-ti, ti-ti, tika tika, ta
One syllable is a "ta" Two syllables is a "ti-ti" Four syllables is a Tika-tika
******Your kiddos know this language even if you are unfamiliar.
Three syllables is EITHER a Ti-Tika, or a Tika-Ti based on pronunciation, this is a harder concept to grasp.
Straw- berry is a Ti-Tika, Apple-sauce is a Tika-Ti.........

With permission from your adult, watch the Little Einstein's episode of Leo and the instrument families. Fold a piece of paper into 4 sections and label each section for each instrument family. Brass, Woodwind, String, Percussion during the episode, fill out your chart by writing the names of the instruments into the correct family.
You can check your work by visiting this website: sfskids.org
and you can play the Instrument crane review game on Quavermusic.com: tinyurl.com/psdquaver
Have your adult help you find the game by following these steps
1. go to the 'student interactives' street sign
2. click on the instruments and knowledge circle
3. Instrument crane is the second game
If you do this challenge, be sure to send me a video of your chart on flipgrid
Use your imagination and things around your house or in your recycle bin to make your own instrument. If you are stuck for ideas, you can always check out ideas on google or pinterest to make 1 or several instruments. It is super easy to make shakers and scrapers. A super challenge would be using different levels of water in glasses to make a water xylophone.
Take a video making or playing your instrument and send it to me! Have fun!
shout out to Covin and Sebastian for telling me about this cool website:
go try a couple of the tools and then head to flip grid to tell me all about it!
Ok, if you love singing this is the one for you! Find a Disney karaoke track and make a video singing the song. Maybe I'll even put a few of them together to put onto the school website!
*Grown ups, you'll need to either use 2 devices or if you have memorized the text, you can use two tabs on your computer. Have your flip grid up, switch to second tab and start the music track then switch back to first tab and hit the record button on Flipgrid.
Have fun!
Show your nationalism by singing or listening to some Patriotic music.
*Grown ups, can help you with the words.
**For extra fun put on a baseball or football jersey and make a hot dog!
